With its 16" bar, you can easily tackle any cutting job, from small branches to large logs. Plus, Makita's excellent customer service and support will ensure you get the most out of your purchase.Mark J. Occhipinti: This is a powerful electric chain saw. I have gas-powered ones as well. Much quieter and cuts branches and trees quickly. I use an 18-inch bar. Also purchased an additional set of batteries, and charge them both when working larger jobs on the property. I know multiple Makita power tools. Happy with them all.

Honest Charley:
Like the saw. It cuts real well. Batteries run out in a lot shorter time than the one hour claimed.
Biggest problem is the light-weightness of the bar and chain. It has thrown the chain several times. I have used many good brands of gas powered saws and rarely any thrown a chain. The bar seems to be much weaker than Oregon, Stihl or even Poulan. About half the teeth on the light chain, obviously not an Oregon chain.
Off to find a decent bar and chain.
Would I buy it again? Probably, but not for the same price I paid.

Bruce: The narrow chain seems to cut well. The saw has good balance and isn't too heavy. It's good value for $400 with two 5AH batteries and the very large dual charger. Charge the batteries simultaneously for best battery performance. According to Oregon, the replacement chain is an R56 costing $21 from Amazon.ca.

Yves St-Denis: Super duper. No cranking. I cut trees that is up to 8" diam no problem. Provided that your chain is sharp and you don't lean heavy on your chainsaw. This chainsaw is smart enough to stop if you overload it. Surprisingly good for about 30 cut of about 8" diameter of green wet wood. Fast 45 minutes charge. You can take cut wood out of the way by the time it charges again. Very safe to use too. I am impress. No more carb worries. Would cut construction beam, joist and plywood no problem if an electrical source is available to charge batteries.

AmbroseAmbrose:
A few years back, I bought a little Earthwise saw, and I have NOT been impressed with it. It barely could do more than pruning. So I was a tad skeptical about getting another battery powered saw. But I figured maybe tech had advanced.. so I watched several YouTube videos, and one in particular did a head to head with this saw against a similarly sized gas saw, and this Makita came out on top.
The next thing I was not sure about is if my current 18V Makita batteries would work. The one that comes with features 5Ah batteries, and mine are 3Ah. But given the significant cost difference, I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm happy to report the 18V 3Ah work fine (BL 1830B) with this saw. I figured they should--just won't last as long. I've been going electric for some time, and I've found I dislike having lots of different chargers and batteries, so I'm glad Makita offers this with their normal 18V.
I took 'er out for a spin yesterday, and made quick work of about an 8" tree (at least the bottom half of it). It prunes off the branches like they're not there, and it slices through the trunk in no time. I'm very impressed! And when I took it back, it still...

Derek Davis:
The local repair shop told me that as a COG (Certified Old Goat) my problems starting and maintaining my Stihl is lack of strength to pull the rope and get the blasted thing started. Probably so, but the continuing litany of aggravations with it left me dreading my too often failed attempts to get it going and keep it going.
I hedged on buying the Makita both on price and the feeling it might not be rugged enough to provide the cords of fuel for our woodstove, our main source of heat. After a month of use, I've never been more completely won over by any tool I've owned. I've had none of the complaints I've read here; maybe Makita had already addressed these by the time I bought.
To start with the "positive negatives:
• no gas. So no stink, chance of fire, slop in the workshop, trips to the gas station, or worry about oil mix.
• no starting delay. I press the button, pull the trigger and it goes. Without fail.
• no air filter to clean
• no annoying tool to adjust tension.
• no stalling. The button stays active for at least a minute and the trigger, again, just goes.
• no kickback. I've cut logs up to 12 inches without a single...
