Leslie D. Rust: Change is a constant in our world today. Transition is more about how we handle/manage the changes that are coming our way. This is a great book that examines how people/leaders/organizations handle that different aspect of change. so much has changed in the past few years, and yet lots of people have no clue as to how to make the transitions to the new realities. This book will definitely help.

Six Sentence ReviewsSix Sentence Reviews: The opening chapter of this book begins with, “It isn’t the changes that will do you in; it’s the transitions.” This premise is then expanded upon throughout the entirety of the book as the William and Susan Bridge explain what transition is, why it’s hard, and how to get through it. However, this book is much more about leading others through transition rather than going through it yourself (I believe their book “Transitions” covers that) and as such, gives practical advice regarding how to help others through transition. This is an excellent book for anyone leading an organization, especially in light of all of the transitions that must come with this pandemic. This will be a book I go back to often throughout my career whenever I am called upon to lead a transition!

John W. Pearson: Imagine this! Patrick Lencioni at age 23: “I first met [William Bridges] before I knew he was a world-renowned author and thinker. I was introduced to him for an informational interview of sorts, just to learn about the world of organizational consulting.”

Fast forward to Lencioni’s foreword in the 25th anniversary edition of "Managing Transitions: Making the Most of Change." Lencioni writes, “All too often, people and organizations that are confronted with change find themselves struggling and don’t know why. They’ve applied every practical solution, quantitative method, and technical approach to managing change, and they’re at a loss for why it’s not working."

Lencioni adds (with gratefulness), “And then they learn about the Bridges transition model and realize that change and transition are very different animals.”

Steve Gladis: Change is situational—stuff happens—but transition is psychological. And psychological transition is a three-step process: Ending (grieving the loss of what used to be); the Neutral Zone (that period of uncertainty between the old and the new); and the New Beginning (launching the new adventure). It’s vital for a leader to help people move through each of these stages. Transitional leadership requires insightful, persistent and attuned leadership, or both the organizational and personal costs are great. By definition, endings cause losses for those involved, and proper endings must allow people to grieve the loss of what used to be. It’s much like losing a friend or a loved one. The grief of such a loss takes time and requires steps of grieving, which may not be skipped without significant consequences. The Neutral Zone represents the period between the ending of the old and the New Beginning. Filled with uncertainty and angst, this period typically takes time but is the place where innovation most often takes root.
