Carlos Raffo: The articles Louise Brooks wrote and that are part of this book are gossipy and entertaining. However, her story told in the introduction is one of the saddest I have ever read about. A person with education, talent, opportunities, good looks, and good luck, managed to ruin her life due to indiscipline and self indulgence. She ended up living an obscure life in an obscure town after throwing everything away. A short career followed by a long sad life full of alcohol and decadence.

Amazon Customer: “Lulu in Hollywood” starts with a forty-six-page introduction by Kenneth Tynan, “The Girl in the Black Helmet”, originally published in The New Yorker of June 11, 1979, and reprinted in The New Yorker of August 29, 2022.
Following are seven essays by Louise Brooks (interspersed with 40 pages of photos):
[1] Kansas to New York
[2] On Location with Billy Wellman
[3] Marion Davies’ Niece (about her close friend Pepi Lederer, who died in 1935)
[4] Humphrey and Bogey
[5] The Other Face of W. C. Fields
[6] Gish and Garbo
[7]] Pabst and Lulu (about the making of the 1929 film “Pandora’s Box”).
At the end there is an epilogue by Louise Brooks, “Why I Will Never Write My Memoirs”, a little piece by Lotte H. Eisner, “A Witness Speaks”, and Louise Brooks’ Filmography (24 films between 1925 and 1938).
This is a great read. I read it overnight in one sitting the day I received it. Louise Brooks’ writes as an eyewitness to the world of filmmaking of the 1920s and 1930s in a style that is crisp and unpretentious.
In a 1998 review of “Pandora’s Box” Roger Ebert wrote:
“In Rochester, she [Louise Brooks] wrote memoirs that were...

roundheadslovene: Late in her life, screen star Louise Brooks began writing film pieces. Some of them are gossipy, some of them are autobiographical, and some of them are brilliant insights into filming and acting. Oh, and some of them are just plain bitchy - as in sharing the photo of Marion Davies, not looking her best, early in her career!
A great story from mostly the Silent Film Era, you might have to look up some of the names she includes.
I loved her life story, but it is her critique of certain films, actors and directors that make this collection truly worthwhile.
"Humphrey and Bogey" is a must read for any Bogart fan. It is how he went from being a near failure on Broadway, and in Hollywood, to a major film star. It took his accepting a major change in the way he presented himself, the way he acted.
The same goes for her piece on Pabst. A wonderful mixture of stories of her time in Europe, and the directing style and brilliance, of G. W. Pabst.
Or the essay on Gish and Garbo -and the economics of Hollywood.
First published in 1982, 3 years before her death, by Knopf, it is now the property of the U of MN Press. The slighly oversized paperback includes a 40 pp Intro by...

Doctor Moss: Louise Brooks called herself “the best-read idiot in the world.” The only part of that that isn’t true is the “idiot” part. She was no idiot.
If you’re interested in this book, you probably know that Brooks was a film star, mainly in silent movies in the 1920s. Despite her years in Hollywood, her best and best known films were made in Germany with Director G.W. Pabst (Pandora’s Box, Diary of a Lost Girl) and France (Prix de Beauté).
The book contains 8 essays written by Brooks, a short piece on her by Lotte Eisner, and a long introduction (40 pages) by Kenneth Tynan. There are also many pictures — movie stills, publicity photos, etc.
Brooks herself doesn’t give anything like a linear account of her life. The essays take particular events, friendships, and topics as organizing themes. Especially in her later years, after her acting career was long over (she left Hollywood for good in 1938), she wrote these essays on life, film, and the film industry.
The essays include ones on her background in Kansas, and her introduction to the movies and Hollywood, numerous friendships and working relationships, major figures in the movie industry...

L.R.P: I wanted to read this book for years and was not disappointed. I just wish the photos had been printed on glossy pages, instead as the same paper as the text. You couldn't see them very well. Other than that, a very good read by the lady herself.

Kel: The nearest you'll get to an autobiography from Miss Slinky and Sexy. Full marks to Lulu for producing such an interesting series of essays. However, we now know that some of her facts, concerning people she did not know so well, are wrong, but we should not blame our flapper - she tried her best. Oh to have known what she had in her full autobiog, which she dumped in the trashcan. Louise claims she did not want to reveal her full sexual exploits, but had no reticence in writing more on this subject than any actress has ever done before or since. I would guess that when she read Mack Sennett's book, and saw that even he shied away from dishing the full dirt on Hollywood, she had no option but to dump the manuscript - in case the 'boys' came round. She does, however, provide a solution to the puzzle as to what happened to the old silent movie stars. The Hollywood royalty (Gish, Normand, Purviance etc.) were apparently picked off one by one, and in various ways, by the movie moguls. All in all this unique book is a great read and well worth the money - not bad for a country hickess with a 'covered wagon' accent.

DH g: A very good book; an insight into the world of the 20's silent movies and the who did what to whom or who was doing what to whom of the era. For a washed up movie actress she produced an excellent comment on the times and herself as well as the industry.
Her movies are well worth a watch too, she changed the world of acting from the over dramatic to the natural. A real icon of the 20th cent.
