ChrisD: No smell or residue, burns long and hot enough to get the charcoal going (I usually build a small chimney of coal). I had used a torch before finding these - threw off lots of sparks and ruined a nice jacket. These fire starters are perfect.

Jim Brown: They would be easier to use if they serrations were deeper. I have to deepen the serrations with a pocket to break off pieces to use. No rating for flavor -- they're only starting a fire, and will have been consumed 30-60 minutes before I start cooking.
