Mary Fenlon: I had a hard time reading this. Partly because there are a lot of words that I don't know relating to the Afghan culture, but mostly because of the violence and way women were treated. Yet it was eye opening and taught me so much through fiction, of what women go through in other countries.
The way we treat others, and love well despite obstacles, is the underlying lesson throughout this book. We all face hardships and obstacles, but how we handle them and love is what lives on for generations.

Diane Dolan: This story is about family, strength, loss and love over a span of about 20 years. It takes place in the Middle East during the war. The main characters are two women who become friends due to their desperate situation and mistreatment. It’s not a book to read if you are looking for something fun and lighthearted, but it is a good story and very well written.

cassandra jaime: Incredible tale of the lives of two women that survive the unimaginable. This will leave you grateful, aware, and with a bigger heart than with what you started with.

Ray: Please be warned of triggers within the book. Very hard to read because of the exposure of the realities by cultural norms in the middle eastern countries especially in times of civil unrest and warfare. Very happy of the knowledge and inside look I earned by the awareness this book shared. Beautiful story but tread carefully if you find sensitivities to such issues. Would recommend to anyone though!

david canford: As a father of three daughters, I am appalled by how women’s rights are trampled upon in many parts of the world and how we seem to be going backwards, and perhaps nowhere more so than in Afghanistan, the location for this novel.
The story is set against that country’s modern history from the 1960s to 2007. The author was made famous by ’The Kite Runner’, and is a wonderful writer. The story is gripping but oh so sad and harrowing. Although it ends on a hopeful note, the return of the Taliban since it was written will have crushed that hope.
The book also illustrates how the West seems to have made things worse. When a communist regime takes over, arms are supplied by the West to the Mujahideen to fight the regime even though the new regime was good for women. As the father of one of the protagonists says, “Now is a good time to be a woman in Afghanistan.” The communists enact equal rights for women, introduce universal education for them, and greatly increase their literacy rates.
When the communist regime collapses, the Afghans turn on each other in a vicious civil war using the weapons the West supplied and the Russians left behind. As the author notes, "an...

Anuradha GuptaAnuradha Gupta: ***SPOILERS AHEAD***
“One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.”
I turned 30 this year. It was supposed to be a remarkable year, I had big plans for it. But my plans were overthrown by the virus’s plans and I was left seething at home. After months of agonizing that nothing is going as planned and my end of the 20s will not be as grand as I would have liked, I was heartbroken, naturally. When we entered the 10th month of the year, the 8th effectively under the pandemic and my birthday month as well, I decided to take matters out of fate’s hand and do something. What did I do? I splurged. I checked out all the books that I had wanted to read for so long and bought them all together. 16 paperbacks delivered to my house just before my big day. One of those books was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini. I had wanted to read the works of the bestselling Afghan writer for a long time now. Having heard great reviews about all his works, I felt a certain calling each time I came across his books but never were they strong enough to compel me into buying them. I surprised myself this...
