I'm a complete noob to ukulele, though I do know a bit of guitar. I recently became interested in the smaller, nicer-on-the-fingers instrument, and did some research to find that this particular model is one of the most recommended and well-reviewed "budget"/"beginner" ukes, with some going as far as to say the sound quality even beats their much more expensive "professional" instruments. (I did indeed get such a comment from my cousin who plays when I let them try this one.)
And that all checks out. I LOVE how this thing sounds and feels in my hands. The folks at Kala clearly care about the instruments they make. Though the images here don't show it, this uke also has a little nut thingy on the bottom that you can attach a strap to. However, the one on mine is a bit loose, can be twisted freely, and often rattles when I play. Nothing a careful dab of glue can't fix, I reckon.
Speaking of glue, I did also find a couple stray drops of it along the higher frets of the fretboard. Again, nothing deal-breaking for me, especially for an instrument I bought on Amazon, but some more experienced players might find that a little detracting. That's all I've...

I was really nervous about buying an instrument sight (or rather, sound) unseen. I was really afraid I was going to get a toy. I read a lot of reviews and finally decided on this one. I am pleasantly surprised! It sounds really good -- I play other instruments, including the violin, so while I don't know anything about ukes, I think I have a pretty good ear.
I also want to address the complaint about it not staying in tune. First, stringed instruments generally need tuning every time you play them. Changes in temperature and humidity affect the tuning. In really hot and humid weather, even professional musicians may have to adjust the tuning during a set! And new strings will need tuning more often as they "stretch". I've been playing for a little over a week and while the strings still need tuning every time I play, it's less and less out of tune as time goes by.
The only thing I found odd is that the strings on each side are wound backwards from each other. In other words on the left side, you turn away to tighten and on the right side you turn toward you to tighten. On the violin, they all are the same. I don't know if that's typical uke...

This is my first ukulele I’ve ever purchased. When you open the box, you see the soft shell gig bag which is very cool. It has a pocket on the front and a strap to carry it on the back. Great for just storing your ukulele without getting it dirty. First impression of the ukulele itself was that it was very pretty! It has a beautiful dark color to it, and the design around the middle of the uke is awesome. It sounds beautiful, and it sounds high quality! I honestly had no problems with the ukulele and once you tune it a few times it holds tune very well! As a beginner, I definitely recommend this ukulele because for its price of $56.99 including a gig bag, it is amazing quality and an overall great purchase! I can’t wait to learn my first song and get to playing it! Great ukulele overall, especially for beginners. I highly recommend!

I bought the starter kit by Kala and liked the uke but I had opted to get it partly for the tuner. It was missing from the package so I found tuning apps (and YouTube by ear) which is effective and realized a tuner isn't necessary. I decided to try the Kala KA-15S since it kept coming up everywhere as the best for a beginner and works well into the intermediate stages... That intrigued me since I'm learning to play quite quickly. It's not only a beautiful instrument, the sound also carries further and is much more distinct than the uke in the starter kit. Not to mention... The case that came with the starter kit was just a flimsy sack. This uke came with a beautiful, soft (quality!) case. I'm so happy I decided to return the other and try this one.
