Roxanne Coats McDonald: This autobiography is written with rawness, honesty and determination to deliver the real story about JR. I believe the stories are written by an iconic country music legend trying to set the record straight. Johnny Cash has a lot of questions about God, life, death, relationships, and love. He has some answers, but not all of them. He is very open about battling his addictions whether it be prescription pain killers, amphetamines, alcohol, downers or all of the above. His career has spanned numerous decades and his fan base many generations. Through it all, he has always been true to his roots and his music. Despite many music moguls telling him what type of music he should play, and how to score big sales, he stayed true to his roots. He also highlights an intimate view of his family, and shares losing a sibling at an early age.

Johnny Cash is a simple man who possesses a God given musical talent which has given him opportunities that most only dream about. This is his story.

R. Lee Barrett: Cash:The Autobiography is a fairly good last word in the Cash story, but don't let it be the only word. Having already penned, contributed to, or given his blessing to several other books about his life, this autobiography is not the extensive, over-arching story that I had anticipated. There are several areas that Cash decides to remain silent on, or otherwise passed on making comment. Many of the highlights of his career, and his life, are similarly not addressed in this work, as a result of the existing body of writing.

What the book does well is provide the finishing punctuation to his life during the twilight of his career, just in the midst of being discovered by a new generation of fans. Cash puts this in context with some stories and perspectives probably unknown to the general public regarding both his personal life and his private life. His recollection of singer Roy Orbison stands out as Cash's view of hope defeating heart ache. Rather than serving as a final tell-all aimed at sales, it is this theme of triumph over personal tragedy that makes this autobiography worthy of the investment of the reader's time. Frau Has: Wer etwas - und etwas mehr - über Johnny Cash erfahren möchte und mit dem Englischen nicht allzu große Schwierigkeiten hat, ist mit dieser (Auto)Biographie bestens bedient. Zum einen lernt man den Menschen Johnny Cash besser kennen und verstehen, zum anderen erfährt man auch viel über das jeweilige Zeitgeschehen in seiner Umgebung. (Was zum Beispiel in dem sehr schönen Film 'WALK THE LINE' etwas zu kurz kommt.) Besonders beeindruckend fand ich, wie stark das Erleben der Natur Johnny Cash offensichtlich geprägt hat - das hatte ich so nicht erwartet. Er beschreibt solche Momente auch total gut.
Etwas genervt hat mich hingegen die große Menge Namen von zeitgenössischen Musikern, die Cash im mittleren Teil des Buches erwähnt. Natürlich hatte ich damit gerechnet, etwas über die Leute zu erfahren, die ihn unmittelbar geprägt haben oder ihm persönlich wichtig waren. Man lernt ja auch gerne etwas dazu, aber in dieser Menge hatte ich bald keine Lust mehr, nachzuschlagen. Deshalb bekommt das Buch von mir auch 'nur' vier Sterne. Für jemanden, der sich in der Musikszene besser auskennt, könnte hierin aber auch ein großer Reiz stecken. Es kommt bei sowas ja immer auf das...
