Robert Pruitt: John Lyons came along at the time of change in the horse industry. For over a hundred years horse training had been a brutal experience for the untrained horse. It was a very dangerous occupation for the humans as well. Several excellent horseman had discovered better methods for training horses in the US and Australia primarily, but learning these methods of more natural horse training took years of observation and spreading the method and natural horsemanship message would wait for a Colorado Horseman with a business degree and excellent communication skills. John Lyons.
This book is an introduction to John's philosophy and horse training methods. Excellent book!
I am giving it 5 Stars because of the content in the book not for the book binding quality which is substandard...unfortunately.

stargazer: Excellent instructor! Takes things in small steps so that the horse is never frightened. Rewards are patting and verbal praise, not treats which cause the horse to constantly beg and bother you. Very similar to the way I trained my best horse. I could keep my reins as light as a butterfly and have him calmly make figure eights. He could walk with his rear legs while trotting in the front. Kept the front very light, perfect for pot holes and rough roads when riding in the dark. We rode about two thousand miles a year, we preferred traveling around rather than show riding. My horse loved it, summer and winter (Nova Scotia).

Diana: I love this book! I have had time only to read a little bit, but it has been perfect for helping me train my 6 year old Molly mule! It has lots of info on ground training, and halter breaking. He also has amazing info on the first ride, trailering, and getting a horse used to being ridden. I am 14 years old, and needed some help training my mule, and this was just what I needed! This book is perfect if you are training a gelding, mare, stallion, or mule!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is going/is training horses or mules!

Karen Williams: John Lyons writes the easiest method of round pen work that I have found to date. He makes it simple to understand and makes learning enjoyable for you & your colt.

Llb Stracey: This book was easy to read and seemed to present a very logical, sensible approach to the subject. It has certainly given me some new ideas for training my horse.

Anne Murphy: I got this book because I had been observing a trainer who was working with horses where I board my horse. He is a certified John Lyons trainer. I was fascinated by how the horses were listening and learning. He recommended the book to me. I don't have an issue with my horse, but was curious. So I've been reading it and using some of the techniques so I'm clearer in my communication with her. And what I found was that my sweet mare listens more closely and is more focused on what I want her to do. The changes are subtle. But it's interesting how well this training as resonated with her. I've also used Monty Roberts and Linda Tellington methods. They each have a place for training and relationship building. But I am especially impressed by John Lyon's methods through this book.

M. Cobb: I loved this book, I bought 2 of them in fact (one for a friend) because I was so impressed with it. John Lyons's teaching is based on the fact that the horse is a condition response animal and that you set up the condition to get the response you want out of your horse. He also likes to think of it as "playing games" with the horse and not just "training" it must be fun for you and the horse and if its not, YOU are doing something wrong-not the horse. I highly reccomend this book!
