Comments

Amazon Customer: How is it possible that a book that explains a 5-point scale with COLOUR does not provide a colour scale? I tried using the downloadable option but it doesn't work. If it didn't cost half of what it cost to return this I would be. So disappointed!

Yvonne Hodgins: This is a really useful book for teaching children strategies for regulating emotions. Simply laid out and practical. Can be used for individuals or for whole school/class.

NZofCA: This is a great tool to use with school-aged children. The "scale" is individualized to each child and there are several ways to design it to make it more meaningful and easier for the child to understand.

M. Mcpherson: Unfortunately I found this really hard to understand and get in to.
I can see the 5 point scale and the benefits to those who use but there wasn’t enough there to tell me how to go about putting one in to place. This was recommended by a health care professional so is obviously highly regarded but for me, I would have liked more of an introduction. Perhaps there is something I should have read in advance of this one? I will look further into it though because there is a lot of success stories in using the scales.

Kay: I bought this to use with children at school as it had been highly recommended to me on an Autism training course and also by an Educational Psychologist. The 5 point scale itself is a simple but effective idea which is working well with some of our pupils with Social/Communication difficulties, but in my opinion the book itself doesn't offer any groundbreaking insights. I read it very quickly and didn't learn much new from it at all that I couldn't have made myself or found elsewhere. As a SENCo, not one of the better books that I have invested in.

A. Stewart: Great tool to use as a therapist. The book presents many different ways to use the 5-point scale: for a child who is aggressive, anxious, etc. My favorite use of the tool is to use a 5-point scale for kids to identify their behaviors at each level 1-5 (e.g., 5 = out of control; hitting, kicking, biting, spitting); next column is for "What I can do" and the final column is for the parent to work out their strategies ("What my mom/dad can do").

Emmanuele: for a child with anxiety this book has offered him a tremendous opportunity to have the confidence that he will learn to be in control of his emotions. The book is done wonderfully that he can see how many different situations there are that can cause anxiety and he can see how it was dealt with. As a mommy of a seven yearold, I'm so thankful that I am able to see he is becoming able to now know and verbalize his emotions and anxiety.

mein3: I purchased this book hoping to get tips on creating a 5 point scale for helping my child recognize and problem-solve their escalation issues. It has a great explanation and anecdotes of situations in which it helped children/teens/adults in visualizing their emotional states. The whole concept is a great strategy, first in creating a scale for emotional states or graphing escalation and as detailed as creating rubric for expected behaviors. However, I was a little disappointed that they don't parallel other social thinking products such as the Zones of Regulation. We were incorporating both systems and if your child is very visual and rigid, this can throw you/them off.

Angela P Harper: I have read many books on behaviour management for my 14 year old son who has Down syndrome and brain damage, and none has had much effect. When I read this it seemed too simple to be of benefit.Yet from the start Noah really bought into it. I think the key parts are getting the child's input with choosing relevant characters, describing the exact behaviours of concern for the particular child and being multi-modal (ie. colour, number, cartoon character and description of behaviour). Noah chose characters from the Epic Mickey game, and coloured in the table we made for "being in control". At first I took a copy of his table with me but within days he didn't need it and instead we could use the numbers as a kind of code. Now he challenges my husband and me if we shout or get impatient saying "you sound like you're on level 3!"

Richard Culbertson: This is a thoughtful update of a classic. If you are looking for ways to help autistic students to understand feelings and to implement strategies to change behavior, I would recommend this as a fundamental part of your library. Please note that this is not a classroom management tool to rate behavior. It is a way to help students manage their own lives.
