KFellars: This was a favorite book for all of my kids because the main character says “hug” over and over as he looks for his mom. The pictures are delightful and the story of the lost baby monkey finding his mother with the help of helpful jungle friends is so sweet.

SMB: Both of my kids love this book, despite it's simplicity. I often wonder how many different ways I can say the word "hug," but they never get bored of it. I even hear them "reading" the book to themselves as they fall asleep. This is my go-to baby present now, because most people haven't heard of it.

Anna D: This is one of those small volumes that every child should have when they first start discovering books. One of our family so loved this warm, endearing story of the small monkey seeing all the other different animals having hugs, while there were none to hug him until he at last found his mum. There are only three different words in the whole book . . . HUG being the dominant one, followed mainly by a question mark. Needless to say, the illustrations are charming too. One of the small people in our family so adored this book - insisted on having it read six times a day - that for a while he seemed to think 'HUG' meant 'book'. Ten years on, it is no surprise that he is an avid reader . . .

SaraJ: We didn't think my 9 month old daughter would understand what was happening in this book because it didn't have words and the pictures showed emotions we thought she wouldn't quite grasp. Not true at all. After a few readings she had very strong reactions -- she would start crying or getting upset during the 2 pages when Bobo is upset because he has no one to hug. She completely understood why he was upset and deeply felt his emotion. We became more careful reading those pages and quickly turned to the next page when mom arrives. Once she got over this initial reaction after a week or two, she loved this book. She loved the build-up of emotion, and she loved when Bobo's mom came running to the rescue. But the reason I really love this book is that a few weeks ago, because of this book, my daughter started saying "hug!" and demonstrates it all the time by hugging two toy animals together, or two books, or two anything. When we pick her up and hold her close she says "hug!" When my husband hugs me, she says "hug!" It is such a joyful word to hear from her, and such a great concept for a now-1 year old to understand, both the emotion of hugging and the idea of two separate things...

S. Coakley-Evans: When my first grandson was born this book became part of his bedtime quiet routine and would be read to him just before he was put down even when he was tiny. Few words so the story can change with the age and understanding of the child. I loved the introduction of support, family and belonging that is at its heart. This set was for our new grandson and like his cousin will be part of his early security. With recycling and reducing wastage in mind I cut out the lovely pictures reproduced from the story which form part of the box, made a plastic case from the clear box top and put the pictures in the case for the time when we can use them as a matching game - match the picture to the page to encourage growing awareness and observation skills. This will add another dimension to a lovely gift.
