Erin DeSmyter: In my search for a pump to drain our hot tub, I spent hours reading reviews and lists of best pumps to use for that purpose. Like everything, some reviews are great and some are not. This pump made several lists of best pumps, so I gave it a try. I have to say it worked perfectly. Because many people commented that the diameter of the discharge hose greatly impacts the time to drain, I bought the largest one that worked with this pump. I bought a 1.25 inch lay flat hose. It was 60 feet long to keep the water off our lawn. We dropped the pump in the hot tub, plugged it in and it ran like a champ. Nearly silent, it emptied the hot tub in about a half hour. When it was done there was between 1/4 and 1/2 inch of water left. I highly recommend this for emptying hot tubs or small pools. For reference, our hot tub hold about 600 gallons of water.

Just Me: We have an open bulkhead walkout from our basement that will often collect rain water. During some of the particularly heavy rainfalls we've encountered this summer, the rain has come down faster than the drainage, resulting in water flooding in under our basement door and into the cellar. As you might imagine, it's been quite frustrating to have to stay on top of and clean up all of this water in our basement during these storms. Cue the entry of this little sump pump we found here on Amazon.

I wanted something that would take the water down to the lowest level we could find, and this takes it to the last 1/4", I believe. We've had a couple of rain storms since receiving this, and we've definitely put it to the test. Happy to report that it's passed with flying colors.

Set up is easy (great for someone like me who is not mechanically inclined) - there are a couple of screw on attachments that allow you to hook up a standard garden hose or something larger (if you're draining a pool, for instance). I used an extra garden hose we had hanging around. From there, you simply plug it in. This device has a sensor that can be attached to one of a couple of posts on the side...

Patrick J. Dughi: Our AC unit went bonkers, and from the second floor, it flooded through to the garage, taking out the drywall ceiling. We didn't know what was causing it - it wasn't frozen up, the emergency drain float wasn't triggering, it seemed like there was just an internal leak.

And in the middle of 60+ days of over 100F temps in Texas, no repairman was available in under 2 weeks.

I got a huge pan under the unit, but it was only 2" deep, and all the sump pumps either didn't have a sensor or didn't start with less than 3-4" of water - except this one. Which was suspicious enough that I didn't trust it.

However, after two days of draining it every 2-3 hours by hand, turning it off when we could risk it - trying to sleep in an 85+ degree house is no fun - I took a risk. It was either this or potentially waste time creating a float switch myself with a cheaper pump made for aquariums ...

Lucky thing too - I was finally able to get a full night's rest, and a week full after that, with this. Every 2-3 hours I'd hear a light hum from the crawlspace, the hose running to the bathroom would spray the water into the tub, and in about 5 minutes it'd shut off. Repeat for...

JLDizzy: I use this pump in a natural spring to fill a 1500 gallon water tank. I put the pump into a bucket that has holes on the side to let water in, but minimize debris. The pump pushes water through a flexible stainless steel braided hose to the tank. The system works great, except for two design flaws that I've overcome:
1. The water level sensor mounting holes are too large. The sensor easily falls out of the side. I've overcome this with a large tie-wrap, wrapped-around the entire pump.
2. The pump has inadequate space at the bottom to allow water in. I found that sitting flat on the bottom of the bucket, the pump's suction creates a tight seal and prevents ANY water from flowing in. I overcame this by putting a small rock at the bottom of the bucket, so that it sits at a slight angle and cannot create a suction seal with the bottom of the bucket. This is a pretty big design flaw, in my opinion.

Two Zero: Despite a vertical rise of just over 3 feet from the pump pickup to where the drain hose went over the top edge of our hot tub after which it dropped immediately to several inches below the level of the pump pickup all the way to the drain, the pump took 65 min to drain 405 gallons. That is far short of the pump's claimed gallons per hour for the stated conditions. That said, for the price, it was still a decent value and got the job done in an acceptable amount of time. So, its great for when its time to drain, clean, and replace the water in your average hot tub or smaller swim spa. But, I wouldn't want to be using it for doing your average size above ground or in ground pool unless you're in no hurry to do whatever within the course of one day.
