Michelle Rooks: I loved this book. I am now a different reader - meaning I notice grammar and attach different meaning to the text because of it. It has provided a more playful and empowered approach to writing. As a teacher, I will use a lot of the lessons with my students. But, honestly, it was most helpful in thinking about my communication patterns. I wrote this entire review without an exclamation point: that’s on purpose. It was truly a surprise. Who knew a book about grammar could be a empowering and informative.

書斎: Grammar for a Full Life(充実した生活のための文法)とう風変わりな書名に好奇心をかき立てられて購入した。中身は語法に関する実用的なエッセイという感じで楽しく読める。はっとする指摘が少なくない。例えば、動詞の歴史的現在に関して。下記のような歴史的現在はごく普通でどの文法書にも載ってる。
In An Ideal Husband, Oscar Wild skews…
ただし次のような文脈では、どれほど鮮明に脳裏に焼き付けられた記憶であったとしても、歴史的現在は用いられない、と著者はいう。
*My late Grandma Hlady tells me never to forget about the folks who don’t grow up with advantages like I have.
tells me → told me…とすれば問題はないが、単なる報告文になってしまう。
歴史的現在の雰囲気を出すには、I can still Grandma telling…がよいという。なるほどと思う(…like I haveが少し気になるが)。エッセイとして楽しめる書である。

old-man-dan: I’m making an attempt to write, not just to inform, but to inspire. I use software that continually tells me I’m using the passive voice. Somewhere in the past I must have missed that lesson. The author’s explanation was awesome and just what I needed. That alone made his book worthwhile.
I’ll mention another one of the author’s examples that illustrate the difference that grammar and punctuation can make in expressing a thought. The phrase “Plows Use Caution” is ambiguous because of missing punctuation. His amusing exploration of different meanings derived from different punctuation is entertaining as well as informative.
The author explores so many points (that I thought I understood) with insight and yes, even passion. He shows the subtleties of grammar and punctuation and illustrates how our choice of words and the structure of our sentences give depth to the meaning of what we say. As the subtitle says, our use of grammar can shape—limit or enlarge—our lives. This book will change how I write. Hopefully what and how I write will inspire the reader as well as the author.
