Gear Aid Aquaseal UV Adhesive: Instant Repair for Waders and Drysuits

Tucson Tom: I actually learned about this stuff from Exped and they now sell a repair kit including this. Here is the huge advantage. With a UV light it cures immediately and you can use the repaired mattress right away. Also the tube seems to last more or less forever. It doesn't work by solvent evaporation -- so you don't open the tube to find out that the contents are solid and "dryed out". You do need a UV light source (the sun works, or so I am told). What I use is a 405 nm "almost UV" flashlight that I have already for minerals (and scorpions). It is perfect and I already have several laying around. Exped includes a UV keychain light in their kit.

ph1902: I had a dime-sized hole in the mesh of my MSR tent, and this was recommended by the MSR rep. It seemed odd to use this on mesh, but it worked great, and since the tube is relatively small and it cures with sunlight, it's now a permanent item in my repair kit.

If you are wondering why Gear Aid is putting these is such small tubes, it's because unlike the non-UV version, the tube doesn't dry out after one use. Most of the profit Gear Aid and Seam Grip make, is by having you buy a big tube of the non-UV version, and having to throw out 90% of it after one use when the stuff dries out in the tube. So every time you need to use this product, you have to buy a new tube.

The non-UV version doesn't dry out so a little goes a long way. As long as you don't inadvertently expose the tube opening to UV light, it shouldn't dry out like the non-UV version.

The problem is, if you have a big tear or a big job to do, one of these tiny tubes is not enough, so time to line the pockets of the manufacturer again . . .

Couple of notes on use:
- IMO, the curing process of 30' is only to hold the item you are gluing in place. It's best to leave the item out for a full day in bright sunlight before you put stress on the bond. That's why some reviewers claim the product doesn't work well.
- As one reviewer mentioned, the tube bleeds a lot. Stuff keeps coming...

I LOVE Aquaseal and regularly purchase the 0.75 oz. package. I needed some while out of town and didn't read the details accurately and ended up getting the 0.25 oz. package. The per-ounce price was more than three times the cost of the 0.75 oz package, and these products are non-returnable because of their flammable nature.

The silver lining is I will use what I bought. But its puny size means it will barely make a dent in my workflow. Meanwhile, it did make a notable dent in my wallet.

I can't stress enough what a terrific product Aquaseal is. But check what you're getting and the per-ounce price before committing to a non-refundable purchase.

Ed: Dries fast! You definitely want to start repair out of sunlight. Preferably indoors if you can. My only problem with this stuff was it spurted out as soon as I took the cap off. I had a tube on the car and it heated up. So just be careful of that. I recommend safety glasses and disposable gloves. It works great and repair has remained sealed.

Katie Gale: Sometimes you don't have time to wait 12 hours for something to cure. Just make sure you do the repairs inside or in the shade or it'll start curing as you're working with it.

M.C.: Ich kann es kurz machen: Das Zeug funktioniert! Ich hatte es für die (leider undichte) Wathose meines Vaters gekauft. Dort war an schwer aufzuspürender Stelle beim Angeln immer Wasser eingedrungen. Wir haben erst überlegt, ob sich das Mittel, was ja doch nicht sooo billig ist (inkl. Versand), auch lohnt. Da die Hose aber relativ hochwertig und seinerzeit recht teuer war, haben wir es ausprobiert. Das Mittel komplett und gleichmäßig auf die Nähte (da wo das Wasser meistens eindringt) aufgetragen und nach wenigen Sekunden bis Minuten war es angetrocknet. Seiter bleibt das Wasser da, wo es bleiben soll: draußen! Allein das zählt, deswegen klare 5 Sterne.
