Visit the Garmin Store for the Montana 610, the best handheld GPS unit available. Enjoy easy to use features, comfortable design, superior build quality, secure closure, and a variety of band types. Get the most out of your outdoor adventures with the Montana 610.AED: Good at recording your track and interaction with chunky basecamp. Route planning ok BUT unless you have basecamp on a computer with you at all times things can go awry. I planned a trip in France, switched on the Montana and to my horror it had completely deleted all my favourites including my planned trip. As my routes are all stored in basecamp on a computer all are recoverable..but no good to me 500 miles away from my computer which I don't want to lug around with me in a bicycle pannier.

David S.: I use this almost exclusively on my dual-sport motorcycle coupled with the AMPS rugged mount(B0055BJBMC). I have been through 3 generations of BMW Motorrad "Navigators" (all purchased second-hand) which are gussied up Garmin units with a BMW dealer database and lifetime maps. The Montana 610 (my first new Garmin) was easy to slip into my work-flow for managing trips and recording tracks. I decided on this device to switch to using OSM map data due to Garmin no longer providing the option to purchase lifetime map updates. I'm glad I did as it's quite easy to find topo maps that are still routable and are free. The Montana is great for use on the motorcycle and I like how customizable it is to set up the dashboard exactly with the features that you use and then to top it off you have profiles and can set up many different dashboards (and settings!) for different purposes, think driving where you want to take interstates vs motorcycle and you want to stay on backroads. I've seen a lot of other riders espousing the benefits of just using a ruggedized cell phone as it's faster, (in some cases) cheaper and more feature rich but I trust the waterproofing and ability to charge the device...

God is a refuge for us (Psalms 62:8): The seller was Amazon. I paid 412 bucks in July 2016.
My old GPS is a Garmin GPSMAP 76S. That was my first GPS, and I've had it since 1999. It is now slow to find satellites, sometimes forgets where it is (and needs to be reset using "new location" even within the same State), and sometimes freezes. It has served me well, before these problems.
GPS
I have to say that I really liked the way the 76S was setup, and the info that it provided me, and HOW it provided me with the info (i.e., screen organization, menu organization). I also like that it put me in control.
What I found with the 610 is that the Garmin GPS wants control. There are many presets like hiking mode, recreation mode, car mode, marine mode, walking mode, 4WD/off-roading mode, mountaineering mode, etc. etc. These various modes attempt to determine routes for me. That's not how I operate. I research a trip, I design the route on mapping software, I create the waypoints, and then I load the coordinates/routes/waypoints into my GPS, and my GPS tracks my progress and directs me to my destination.
In order to use the 610 the way I want, I have to set the profile to "direct control" with all...

Permite 3 pilas AA o bateria LiOn extraible (2000 mAh incluida).
Bajo consumo:
Duracion pilas recargables AAx3 (Powerex 2700mAh): 19h
Duracion bateria LiOn 2000mAh: 16h (esperaba solo 14h)
Admite 4000 waypoints, 200 traks y Geocaching

Dennis Eichenlaub: Nothing's perfect, but Garmin makes the best outdoor GPS units available. I do a lot of biking (5,000 miles a year or so.) And I have a lousy sense of direction. A bike GPS is a requirement for me. I love the Garmins. They are big. They are heavy. And they are very, very, tough. My previous GPS was a Garmin 450. For five years, it performed flawlessly in very cold, in very hot, in heavy rain, and in everything in between. It survived a lot of jostling, a lot of bumps, and even a couple of drops. Recently the power switch stopped working. If I fiddle with it long enough, I'll get it to turn on, and it will continue working. But I decided I wanted a new unit. I chose the Montana because the screen is bigger (easier to see with my old eyes) and because the bike mount is better. (I will review the mount separately.)
The Montana 610 is an upgrade of the 600. The major new feature is that it uses both GPS and GLONASS satellites. The screen is transflective LCD. It is easier to see than my 5-year old unit, with better color rendition. However, it's not as good as a smart phone. The backlight doesn't help much when I'm outside during the day. I usually turn it off. The touch screen...

David: The Garmin is pretty much the only choice for mapping GPS.
Observations, in no particular order.....
- Unit is very thick. Whilst the front is no bigger in area than a smart phone the unit does seem to be unnecessarily thick. The ability to use AA *might* contribute to this thickness.
- Considering the size, it would have been nice to use a battery with a higher capacity
- Unit is either on, or off; does not seem to have a sleep mode similar to the Garmin Edge 1000. So, ever time the unit must go through a full power on cycle.
- Garmin OS is very simplistic, sure Garmin could had something more modern looking. Does take a while to learn ones way around
- Cannot see any way to save the unit configuration.
- Basecamp software is truly awful.
- Birdseye data for Iceland (planning a trip) is either cloudy or snow covered
- Can only download Birdseye segments in 232mb blocks
- 1:25,000 OS maps are shockingly expensive
- Any maps loaded onto the unit can only be used with the basecamp software when the unit is plugged into the computer - would be nice if the maps were also tied to a particular computer
- Battery life seems okay, too early to...
