Catalina: I have only used it on 2 different days of hiking so far. It comes in handy when you have no service and need to know which way to go to drive to the next trailhead. Also when you want to hike one of the many red river gorge trails that don’t have a marked trailhead you can use the gps coordinates found online and saved to your unit to figure out where to start. I love having the app that is linked with unit and being able to create collections on the website. It makes it easy to download waypoints for a specific area that I like hiking. I also enjoy the messaging feature. I have my sister’s number saved as a contact and it’s nice to be able to send her a premade messages when hiking. I send a message when I start a new trail with my coordinates and on longer trails a checking in message. I moved to a different state then my family recently so I am currently hiking alone so it gives them a peace of mind that I am able to check in with them while hiking with my dog alone. I paid extra for a gps unit with the sos button in case I get lost (hopefully I won’t with the built in compass and being able to track back to waypoints) or I get injured.

Mike: Used for one week in northern Ontario old boys fishing trip, used just for texting. The battery life is great still had 90% after the week!
The unit worked as advertised, everyone back home received their texts and the location maps. It interfaced perfectly with my iphone.
My only complaint would be it’s a little clunky to use, kind of like an old flip phone.
Other wise it was nice to stay connected back home. The weather feature was excellent and we planned our return home following the forecast.
A solid well built unit, Would definitely recommend!

Amazon Customer: Bought this as we spend a lot of time off-grid, exploring the back country and dangerous and remote places. It arrived just in time for a week long Mini expedition mountaineering/climbing in the Sierras. This was a test run for the Garmin and we were checking in regularly with our family. Late one night a text message came through from family “Fire in your area evac now! The Creek fire was Blazing our direction. We left as early as we Safely could and made us safely out of the burn area, 3 hours later we would not have been able to exit. Because of the messaging ability of the Garmin we were able to make it out and through Shaver Lake without being surrounded by fire. This was worth the purchase price and the subscription in itself.

Lynn Callegari: I just purchased the Garmin Inreach SE+ on Amazon for 2.2 Benjamin's (factory refurbished) which I thought was a great price. It looked brand new and activated without any issues. Sent a test text to my wife. It uses bluetooth to connect to your phone to enter texts so it's the same as sending a text on your smart phone, but you can write texts from the unit if your phone is lost or damaged. Everything is working. I signed up for the basic plan which is $15 per month with a yearly fee of $25. I can freeze my account in the off season months to reduce costs. This plan has unlimited "preset" texting with predefined messages and recipients (each text gives the sender your position and a link to a map showing your position). All other texts are $0.50 each with 10 free per month.
For example, the 3 preset text messages might look like:
1. heading in
2. Engine trouble, everyone safe. Coming home on kicker motor, will be late. Will update you later.
3. trouble come get me.
You also have an SOS button which contacts an emergency call center which will coordinate your rescue.
Better than a PLB in a lot of ways, since you know help...

Amazon Customer: I'm a back country elk hunter that was looking into a way to communicate with my wife or call for help if needed, while I am miles back in the wilderness and out of cell service. This thing was just the ticket. It works well and gives my wife peace of mind knowing I'm ok instead of not hearing from me for a few days. The service can be a bit slow sometimes but has always worked. It's also nice knowing I have a lifeline if I get hurt or injured. Definitely worth the money! The touch screen on the device itself is a pain in my opinion and it's much easier if you bluetooth with your cell phone. I do wish the battery life was better. I have to carry a power bank to charge items if I'm in more than two days.
