Chris LaVesser: A friend and I did a recent backpacking trip in a remote part of Alaska. We were never going to be within 100 miles of a road, and our primary recovery by float-plane would be dependent on our proximity to a sizeable lake. We wanted to keep our families informed of our status, we wanted the DarkSky weather reports, we wanted comms with our pilots, and we thought the InReach SOS service was a nice back-up in case things truly got ugly.

Here are the functions we used:
1. Pre-set text messages to family.
2. Weather reports.
3. Send/receive text messages to communicate with our pilots on extraction day.

Here's how it worked:
1. If you log in to your Garmin portal and set up the pre-set messages ahead of time, these are incredibly easy to use in the field. When we configured our pre-sets, we opted to include a link to our location page.
We created two pre-sets: one was a simple check-in -- we're OK and here's where we are; the other was an end-of-day, here's where we're camping message. Our family members reported that the texts were reassuring and gave a good point marked on a map, allowing them to keep track of our whereabouts and progress. From our...

Shaun GibsonShaun Gibson: First off, sorry, this turned into a bit of a monster write up, but I thought it important to give a bit of background info. This all happened a while back, I just never got around to writing a review.

Anyhow, my partner and I are both keen walkers who do quite a bit of mixed walking/hiking around the UK including lowland as well as a fair bit up in the fells/mountains around the usual suspects in the Brecons, Snowdonia and the Lake District. After checking my phone on the odd walk and seeing no signal I wondered to myself what would happen if the sh1t hit the fan.. I’m one of those boring types who always carries a good first aid kit (mainly trauma type (think big dressings and a tourniquet) rather than plasters and savlon, in the hope that if I needed to I could hopefully keep someone alive, rather than treating them for a nettle sting. So after much “umming” and “ahhhhing” I decided to splash out and buy the inreach mini.
Fast forward around 2 months and we were having a wander up Snowdon (complete with my shiny inreach mini). We got to the summit and as it was blowing a hoolie we decided to head down a little to find some shelter for lunch. Around 300...

Maurizio Ruscio: Finalmente posso stare tranquillo durante i miei viaggi in moto.

Amazon Customer: I purchased the Garmin Mini InReach to replace a competitor’s product that in this review shall be called Sx. Sx did not perform well in ‘suburban’ testing over three days and never made it to field tests. I had been a user of the Sx’s previous generation of products for over a decade, so I am somewhat well versed in the abilities of it’s system. The InReach Mini exceeded those benchmarks in every way. The InReach Mini passed the same suburban tests without issue in a few hours, moved to field tests where it performed flawlessly and is now just part of the normal gear.

THE SHORT STORY:

I works fine all day! Having that SOS button could seriously save your life. Tracking and messaging will keep the family and friend at home happy!!! Messaging is great. Tracking works. Twitter works. Facebook might work but is not that great. It is not a good tool for navigation but in a pinch it would work. It is small so it is never in the way. If you want a good tracker with flawless messaging, go for this. I recommend this product!

THE GOOD:

Messaging, the weak point of the Sx, has been flawless with the Mini. The speed of sending and receiving is far...

Rabbi Goldstein: Very reliable messaging from the trail (no cellphone service required). Tip: Use your 3 "preset" messages to test the device as often as you want (I send a ton of them; they are FREE on even the cheapest monthly $15 plan). Compact, light weight. Pairs smoothly with free "Earthmate" cellphone ap (I carry my Samsung cellphone with Earthmate, paired easily via bluetooth to the InReach device. I carry it in a waterproof pouch in a neck strap around my neck (also bought here on Amazon) so it is hanging in front of me to look at while on the trail. Allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds -- dependable GPS tracking (no cell service required) and touch-screen "bread trail" tracking as I move along the trail. (Easy to find my way back if lost!) I just set "Tracking send" to NEVER (so no charges unless I occasonally want to notify somebody) and "Logging" frequency to every 1 or 3 seconds (this inserts the log points on the map to show the "squiggly line" visually and record my route. (logging is FREE--unlimited use). I imported some maps from TRAILFORKS (my favorite bike/hiking free ap/website) as .gpx files directly into the "explore.garmin" website which you use along with the InReach...
