Pete: My only reservation: the unit is slightly chunkier than expected, but fits well in the hand. I found the latest E-trex models too small and fiddly. Having more buttons means direct access to pages with less menus to work through. It is also easier to use with gloves on.The screen is large enough and text easily read (again an improvement over e-trex). Initial aquisition is quite fast (eg when switching on after driving hundreds of miles!). Being able to use a rechargeable power pack, but also normal AA cells is great and should save money. I haven't loaded any maps yet, but I found the base map is actually quite useful, though definitely not for walking. Its very easy to mark way points and edit them (again the editing is much easier and quicker than e-trex).
Overall, definitely worth paying the extra for this over an e-trex model. Personally, I didn't think it was worth paying the extra for a built in compass and barometric altimeter in the "s" model. I wouldn't dream of going out without a real compass and barometric altimeters are not much better than GPS in practice, as they can "wander" due to changes in atmospheric pressure, especially on windy days. Super Max: I bought the GPSMAP 64 on a Cyber Monday deal to replace an old Etrex Vista HCx that I use primarily for geocaching. The 64 is a big improvement over the Etrex because it supports paperless caching by downloading the cache description and log data.

Functionality of the 64 is good with similar menus to the Etrex so I had no problems using it immediately. The user manual is just 18 pages and very poor, not enough information for a new user to Garmin gps's. My old Etrex manual is 54 pages and much more detailed for a simpler gps. You will have to look to the internet to get educated on the 64 model.

My big complaint about the 64 is the incredibly cheap build quality. The look and feel of the unit and the buttons remind me a child's toy walkie-talkie. The battery compartment lid is so loose that it rattles and moves when you grip it to push a button. I had to pad the inside with a piece of rubber to make it fit tighter. The unit is definitely not water or dust resistant with the poorly fitting battery door.

Darrell: This GPS unit will lock on to satellites VERY quickly, even fresh from the box. When I first turned it on, it was simply to browse the menus, but I was surprised it was able to accurately lock on to my position even inside my room (location later verified through ArcGIS and it was only off by 9 feet...from inside a room!) I found my first geocache this past weekend which was fun, and I use it regularly for light surveying of public utility features for my job. I save those as waypoints and import them into ArcGIS for positional accuracy, and although it's certainly not survey-grade, it's awesome for the quick and dirty and is surprisingly accurate (within about 3 feet I'd say). Great product.

Click & Read: Wir haben seit Jahren ein GPSmap 60 und ein GPSmap 62 im Einsatz. Wir benutzen die Geräte vor allem fürs Geocaching und sind mit beiden sehr zufrieden. Das 64er haben wir wegen der zusätzlichen GLONASS-Unterstützung gekauft - und das hat sich vollauf gelohnt.

Das neue Navi bietet in der Regel eine Genauigkeit von +/- 3 Metern, die Vorgängermodelle liegen bei 5 Metern. Solange die Antenne nach oben gerichtet ist, hält das 64er diese Genauigkeit meist auch unter Bäumen und bei bedecktem Himmel. Wir hatten die verschiedenen Geräte parallel im Einsatz. Sank die Genauigkeit des 64ers mal auf +/- 5 Meter ab, waren die anderen schon bei +/- 8 bis 10 Metern. Die Glonass-Satelliten leisten also ihren Teil.

Für Wanderer oder Mountainbiker ist diese höhere Genauigkeit eher irrelevant. Den Weg findet man auch so. Allerdings sind die aufgezeichneten Tracks, sollte man sie auf Google Earth oder nach BaseCamp rüberladen, weniger ausgefranst als früher, und auch die Streckenmessung dürfte genauer geworden sein. Das ist für uns aber weniger interessant.

Beim Cachen macht sich die höhere Genauigkeit am meisten bezahlt. Einmal im Zielgebiet angekommen, läuft man...

Amazon Customer: I have been using a Lowrance iFinder H2O for years. It has served me well. I am only replacing it because the screen has become hard to read at times. It is a black and white model with no real maps. I put a Topo software on it. But it is just elevation lines.
The Garmin was a nice upgrade. I have a real color Topo map on it. I purchased the $30 map through Garmin. I have noticed the map is a little out of date with new roads not showing up though. The Garmin loads up a lot faster than the Lowrance did. Even in heavy cloud cover and thick tree canopies. It can also find me indoors. It also does a good job of tracking me while in my pocket too. I am still getting use to it. But so far I have really enjoyed using it. It does what I want it to by keeping me from wandering around the south Arkansas river bottoms lost. I have a compass, just in case, and know how to use it. But the Garmin makes it more fun.
If you like Geocaching, it has some of those spots preloaded. It also has a place to share notes with other cachers. I have never geocached. But just playing around with it I found a cemetery less than a mile from my house I did not know about. And I have lived in this area...

Buck RogersBuck Rogers: I use this for mountain biking. The coverage in the thick Mendocino coast redwood forests has been very good for navigation and tracking but the altitude readings go way off with the base unit. If you really want to record your climbing then get the next model up (64S) since it has a barometer for about $45 more. I find the track summary page hard to read while riding but it is a small screen. I may need to play with the settings in order to see the speed and distance covered without stopping to look closer. However, the map screen is clear and is easy to see your relative distance to the destination and the overall track since you can zoom in and out with a push of a button. I particularly like the free Garmin Basecamp software you can download to your computer. It syncs easily with the GPS to download your tracks and edit them. After the ride, I download the track, rename it appropriately and edit out the extraneous data points such as stopped coordinates and any obvious outliers. Clicking on the track map pops up a summary sheet with all the info you want like Time Moving, Time Stopped, Av Speed moving, Total Distance, etc. There is also a Birdseye satellite image you can...

Tornarssuk: Je recherchais un successeur pour mon eTrex Vista acheté il y a des lunes. J'avais en plus des problèmes de contact avec le levier de commande. Le GPSMap 64 est un excellent remplacement pour celui ou celle qui s'intéresse principalement à ne pas perdre son chemin en randonnée. J'ai préféré ce modèle à ceux du type "smartphone" car j'ai un priori en faveur de touches physiques plutôt que virtuelles. Les autres fonctions (geocaching, "aventures", liaison avec un smartphone, cartes préchargées, photographie, etc.) n'ont aucun intérêt pour moi.
En positif :
- très grande réceptivité aux émissions des satellites : plus d'interruption en cas de couverture par les arbres et localisation rapide après mise en marche
- un écran un peu plus grand et plus clair grâce à la couleur : plus d'informations disponibles sans nuire à la clarté
- énormément de mémoire grâce aux cartes micro-SD permettant d'emmagasiner facilement plusieurs cartes géographiques détaillées (les cartes gratuites de gpsfiledepot.com et de garmin.openstreetmap.nl)
- les cartes routables facilitent la navigation, autant pour la navigation vers un objectif ou en suivant une...

J.E.: My old GPSMAP 60 is on its last legs so I picked this one up. In hindsight I should probably have gotten one of the models with bluetooth connectivity, this one doesn't have that. These units are tough as nails, accurate and reliable under thick tree cover. I spend a fair amount of time off the track in unfamiliar areas for both work and play, so this comes in handy. Like most folks, I use my phone to navigate in the car. I use my GPS more for mapping and navigating in the boonies. I really like ability to load custom maps. If you have an android phone or tablet you should check out the Custom Maps app. It lets you take a picture of a paper map and quickly geo-reference it using google earth. The resulting file can easily be uploaded to google earth and to your GPSMAP 64.

M. Hom: Hiermit kaufe ich jetzt von Garmin leider das 5. GPS-Gerät. Ich hasse Garmin wegen ihrer Gier–Politik. Kein Wunder das die Firma aus den USA kommt. Gerne würde ich bei einem anderen Hersteller ein Outdoor-GPS kaufen, aber das Angebot ist dünn. Der Hauptgrund für meine Kaufentscheidung ist das 100% getestete Garmin – Format mit dem ich Tracks und Waypoints andere Kartenhersteller einspeichern kann.

Ich habe schon für Outdoor 2006 das GPS 60 gekauft und mit diesem meine Outdoorkarte für Nord-Thailand erstellt. Habe inzwischen 2700 Waypoints und 84 Tracks. Das GPS 60 kann nur 500 Wegpunkte und 20 Tracks speichern. So braucht man evtl. draußen im Gelände ständig ein Laptop um mit MapSource zwischen den Tracks zu wechseln.

Die Verkäufer von Garmin haben ihr Angebot so abgestimmt das man für ein Gerät das mehr als 1000 Waypoints abspeichern kann viel Geld ausgeben muss. Obwohl Speicherplatz heutzutage fast unbegrenzt zur Verfügung steht geizt Garmin damit um seinen Kunden das Geld Stück für Stück aus der Hosentasche zu ziehen. Dafür muss man dann den kostenpflichtigen Abo-Dreck wie Birdseye mitfinanzieren.
Garmin Map 64 schafft jetzt im Jahre 2014...
