The Garmin eTrex 10 Worldwide Handheld GPS Navigator is the perfect choice for those looking for a reliable and easy-to-use handheld GPS unit. Featuring a 2.2-inch monochrome display, it provides clear visibility and the waterproof construction prevents water damage. Additionally, it comes with a high-precision sensor which ensures accurate positioning of the device. With its comfortable build, quality construction, and secure closure, the Garmin eTrex 10 is one of the best Handheld GPS Units available. Midnight Rambler: I'll just add some information I would have found useful when researching this item. I purchased this so I could geotag my photos from a trip from the Midwest to Oregon and Washington.
The first leg of the trip was on Amtrak from South Bend to Portland Oregon. I had the device turned on the entire time. It was on for 56 hours. It recorded 9916 data points. I think the limit is 10,000 or maybe 9,999 so that should give you a pretty good idea of it's limit.
I turned the unit off at night subsequent to the train trip as we wouldn't be moving. We were gone a total of 14 days. Each time I was going to turn the unit off I saved the current track and cleared the existing track. I wanted to make sure I didn't loose any data. Near the end of the trip I did get low memory warnings, but it did make it through the trip. I don't know why it has such limited memory. In this day and age 8mb of storage is nothing.
Battery LIfe - I purchased new Lithium Ion AA batteries for the trip. I replaced them every time I got a low battery warning. In 14 days I went through 3 sets of batteries. The last set is still in the Garmin and seems ok at this point.
All in all, I'm please...

BB: This is an excellent GPS once you’ve learned how to use it properly. Some people are wary of the blank maps, but I find this makes it easier to stay aware of your surroundings while maintaining a proper heading. Learn to use and write proper coordinates and this is very precise. You can mark your own locations and landmarks with one click, essentially making your own personalized map of one area. You can save your tracks and bring them up later, making it easy to scout out paths for future use.
This is a great value, my only complaint would be the battery life. I had hoped I could use it with rechargeable batteries, but they didn’t last long enough my last camping trip. For it to work properly, it needs to be on for long periods of time so that it can track your location in real time and make a map. Extra batteries are a must with this one.

John Egge: I had no real reason to have a color display........
I simply need to record spots and return to them later and find my way back.
It does that just as good as one that cost more than twice the money.

Mark Buck: I've owned four previous handheld GPS units. All would warn me when the batteries were getting low, but warned me before the batteries were completely dead. Thus, I was never stranded / lost because of losing battery power. I was always able to get to fresh batteries before they died completely. That is not the cae with this unit, at least with the one experience I've had with low batteries. I got the low battery warning and two minutes later the unit died completely. I was 3/4 of a mile from my vehicle in the middle of the forest on a brook trout stream and hour before dark. I made it back using my compass (lucky), but I now carry extra batteries when using this unit.

Jeff Lippincott: This device (the eTrex 10) is a gem. Thus the five star rating. I've been studying it and using it on bicycle rides for the past two months. I've read several of the Amazon reviews for this product, and few do a good job of informing the consumer. I think this is because the product caters to so many different endusers: boaters, kayakers, walkers, hikers, off-road cyclists, and on-road cyclists. My review is written from the perspective of an on-road cyclist. And I'm not going to write a review as much as merely answer a series of questions.
1. Can you charge this device using a USB cable? >>No. The device uses two AA batteries for power. They can be cheap alkaline, or the more expensive rechargeable NiMH or lithium. Alkaline work ok if the weather is warm or hot. If you go the rechargeable route, don't buy cheap ones that have less than 2000 capacity. I didn't know rechargeables came in different capacities. Duh! The rechargeable batteries you need to recharge in a separate recharging device.
2. What do you use the USB cable for that comes with the device? >>To connect your device to your PC or Mac so you can update software or move GPX files on or off the...
