Nerdy HermitNerdy Hermit: I have a rather picky terrier mix who seems rather suspicious of food that’s not fresh. Come meal time, he sniffs his food then eats it so long as it has that “freshly opened bag” smell. If not, he sniffs it then looks at me as if I’m trying to serve him something from the dump. He will not touch it! I don’t buy excessively large bags of food. He’s 32lbs and fit. I buy 13lb bags of food as it’s the smallest bag that brand makes. Since buying this, his food has remained fresh smelling. Every time I open it, that “new kibble scent” wafts up. Not once has he turned up his nose at his kibble. He happily eats his way through an entire bag rather than snubbing it halfway through. I love the size too. It fits nicely next to his feeding and drinking area. I can also see how easy this would be to grab and go in case of emergency. Knowing I can pick it up by the indented grips and leave swiftly makes me feel even better about this purchase.

luciddreamer: I have purchased these containers through the years for many different uses. I have found them to be pet resistant, but not animal proof. And they do keep food fresh. How do I know? I don’t go about eating our dog’s food to test it out but I did store a large 5 lb bag of Easter candy I purchased reduced after the holiday. The candy was still fresh months later while the second bag I purchased and was not stored in the container was not as fresh. I am seriously thinking about using one of these to store cereal, chips, ice cream cones (just the cones haha!) to keep them fresh during the humid summer months.

I originally purchased several many years ago because I had cats on three different diets (kidney, low fat and regular). I had one cat that would rip bags open. This solved the problem. I have through the years purchased larger ones to store 50# bags of bunny food, feed hay for bunny, bird seed and dog food. Some were stored indoors, some in a shed). I never had a problem with critters. I purchased one for my mother and her bird seed. She stored hers in a semi protected outdoor area. She did have squirrels chew the lid on hers.
