SRY: A well written review of Frederick Douglass’ life and impact. Good job of analyzing what is known and speculated. Appreciate the candor in reviewing as he states the good and not as good things. Well done, a great book on a great man.

Bruce Robinson: My supposedly-good schooling decades ago dropped the ball when it came to Frederick Douglass. His remarkable life is well documented here. The book opened my eyes to the day-to-day reality of slavery, the political tumult before the Civil War and the nature of Reconstruction and "The Restoration."

David Webster: Brilliantly written. Eye opening on this aspect of black history. Fascinating study of a man moved by his Christian faith towards prophetic preaching and action to fight against slavery. I was left feeling why have I only just come across him. A very intelligent and brilliantly written biography.

Fred: An extremely well written biography about one of the giant figures of America's 19th Century. I am 83 years old, and although Douglass was one of the most recognized persons of his time, both in the U.S. and Europe, it was profoundly eye-opening and embarrassing for me to realize how little he had been mentioned in the history books I grew up with. Despite his enormous efforts and accomplishments, we still have long way to go on both sides of the Atlantic to reach his expectations.
