Ouch: I've purchased these a few times and I'm pleased. Now I do change my filter every month during the summer so I don't feel the need for a high MERV filter. Pricing for the dozen box is reasonable compared to the alternative I've used in the past. I will purchase again.

Randy: I was using Merv 13 filters thinking it would be best as it filters very fine particles.

Did not know you could damage your HVAC unit and components using too high of a merv rating.

The general rule is 5-8 is good for residential. 9-12 are rated for hospital labs / commercial and 13 through 20 range from hospitals to pharmaceutical companies with high-end systems.

I save more money now and no longer risk damaging my system. These fit nicely and work just like I want.

Would recommend them as they are the best deal in terms of quality-price-quantity.

MikeMike: I have been using these filters for years in my home without a problem. I replace my filters every 30 days of run time not calendar days. My thermostat monitor the run time and lets me know when to replace it. My return air grill is 18" x 24" x 1". The actual size of these filters are 17 1/2" x 23 1/2" x 3/4" which is not a problem. They still fit fine in the grill with no gaps. You get 12 individually wrapped filters that come in card board box for storage and retrieval when needed. They are MERV 8 filters which are great for residential application. Don't expect these to be commercial type HVAC filters. If that's what you want then spend the money to get them. These are your standard residential card board framed disposable filters that do a great job and you get 12 filters for $60.00. I have never had an issue with these filters folding or collapsing into my return air plenum. Just make sure you get the proper MERV rated filter for your system.

What I learned from two HVAC service companies over 20 years is that choosing the right filter depends on how clean you want your house and the power of the fan motor. A filter protects the motor as well as the air in the house. Everyone has their own standard for air, so I will focus on the motor.

Fan motors burn out for two reasons: dirt on the motor and having to work hard to suck the air through.
Low merv filters let dirt accumulate on the engine -- the result is a dead engine and a $250+ repair. So you need a reasonable merv to protect the motor. But overheating is the second issue.

As a filter accumulates dirt, the holes in the filter become blocked, and it is harder for the air to pass through. This causes the filter to curve in because the dirty air cannot pass through as easily. But more importantly, the motor has to work harder (think of drinking through a straw - soda vs milk shake). Eventually, the air will work its way through, but it may carry some of the smaller particles with it, and it will certainly overheat the motor. The overheating may not be enough to...

Ron Graham: When the filters arrived, the box from Amazon was perfect. However the packaging from the manufacturer inside the shipping box was damaged and one of the filters was squashed. The filters work good.
