eve: Bought this for my son because he goes hiking a lot. We’re in Putnam County NY and there are lots of bears and coyotes. Being a mother I worried about that. My son laughed and rolled his eyes but I feel better knowing he has it. He hasn’t used it yet so I can’t comment on that but I’m sure it works as promised.

Engineering Geek: I got this horn to scare black bears away from my deck, after a visit by three of them last Winter on a mild day. The local bear rescue place told me that bears don't like loud noises and recommended this horn. I haven't had to use it yet, but I did toot it once to see how loud it is. The answer is "very". But it is actually a very tiny device - you'll probably lose it and not be able to find it when you need it. So I keep it on a table by the door.
Edit on 9/30/15: Had a visit by a black bear the other day. He wasn't causing any problems, just looking for a snack before hibernating for the winter. This one was probably around 100 pounds, knocked over my bird feeder pole and started rooting around in the bird seed in the yard. But then he headed toward the house. After taking his picture, I got the horn and gave it a short, half-second toot. The bear went running away like there were pic-a-nick baskets down the road and he had just gotten his invitation! Conclusion: this horn is VERY effective against black bears. I'll be carrying it on my daily walks around our backwoods neighborhood - along with a can of bear repellent spray and my .357. I doubt very much I'll have to use...

Charlemagne 🐇: I've been wanting to buy an airhorn for awhile for a few reasons, but bought this one after reading the reviews on how it quieted barking dogs. I'd previously tried yelling, using a high pitched alarm and a dog whistle. None of these worked.

I live next door to an old moron who keeps getting dogs and dumping them into a pen in his yard. He hardly ever interacts with the dogs and doesn't even feed them daily. Lately they have been working dogs that weren't a big deal, but a couple months ago he got a mutt that barks and whines constantly whenever it sees somebody. The dog is not stupid, just lonely. I have over an acre of land that I let my own dogs play on (with supervision) and I could no longer enjoy being outside with this dog barking for hours at a time. I did get in my neighbors face about it, and got nothing but a 70+ year old man whining like a toddler and making excuses. Next time I took my dogs out, I used this little air horn and told the dog to be quiet. It did the trick. He shuts up and goes back in the dog house.

The can is small and can fit into the inside pocket of my jacket. It does make a pretty loud noise, but not so much that you would need to use...

K Hoffman: These things are loud! I got this for my wife to keep by her bed in case of an intruder.

I tested it in the house when I bought it. My wife is still mad at me for not letting her know. She didn't seem to be dissuaded by my attempts to explain that it was part of the test to see how someone not expecting it would react. Of course, if this was a real scenario with a real "bad guy" you never know what's going to happen. But it's definitely going to be more effective than just yelling.

My only complaint is a small one: The plastic horn is more brittle than I think it should be. The first one we bought arrived totally shattered. That was largely Amazon's fault since they packed it with a loose heavy item. However, even still, in my opinion the horn could be made out of a more durable plastic.

Knightwind: I bought this device for only one reason. My neighbor has a dog that is really annoying. It will bark when a leaf falls from a tree for up to 20-30 minutes solid. Not just any bark mind you, but one of the loudest barks I have ever heard from a canine. This resulted in my childish response, to blast that sucker with this horn when he was driving me nuts. Well, needless to say, it only aggravated him further. The horn works well, and I'm sure all my neighbors are glad I only used it once. lol

I have solved the problem of his irritating bark for the most part though - I replaced all my windows on the house with triple pane glass, and that cuts out an amazing amount of the sound. I can now watch TV on the opposite end of the house from the dog, and I do not have to turn up the TV when he barks. So, word to the wise - if you are willing to spend thousands of dollars on new windows, you too can solve a problem like this. (My house is 30+ years old, so it was time for new windows anyway.)
