Meise: Nice pictures and background informations to the Chee/Leaphorn books.

Opa: Even before we moved to New Mexico, we enjoyed the Hillerman books, both Tony’s and Anne’s.

As the cover describes, you visit both authors favorite Navaho lands in the four corners area. Visit thes sacred sites and rugged terrain that Lt. Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito patrolled, fought crime, and helped their people and visitors alike. AND solved mysteries and caught criminals. Oh, and tolerated non-Navaho police and FBI, alike.

Beautiful artwork and excellent insight into his daughter’s insights into her Dad and the land they both love to share with their readers.

Our thanks for this entertaining and thoughtful book.

Kindle Customer: I've been binge reading the entire series of Hillerman Navajo police mysteries. Only one thing slowed me down: getting to a description of Ship Rock, or Window Rock, or Monument Valley, or an old trading post, and not being satisfied with how my imagination was working with the text to create a picture of that place. I'm a Pennsylvania girl, and my landscape look nothing like the Four Corners ofArizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. Google Images was my go-to, but I much prefer having this permanent reference at hand in order to see the sights that keep Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito walking in beauty.

David Taylor: A wonderful book that really makes the Leaphorn/Chee novels come to life. Anne Hillerman has done a fantastic job following in her father's footsteps. I've read both of her novels and am looking forward to the third.

Patto: This book places us in the exotic New Mexican world of sandstone buttes, red mesas, prehistoric rock formations and arid empty spaces. Navajo cops Leaphorn and Chee, busy as they are, are always stopping someplace to appreciate the view. If you ever wondered what those views look like, this book will satisfy your curiosity. Hillerman's descriptions of the natural world are wonderfully written, but let's face it, there's nothing like a photo.

The photos in this book are dramatic and well composed. But they suffer from muddy reproduction, and some of the most dramatic shots should have been shown bigger. So it takes more than one look sometimes to realize how good a photo really is. But certainly the book conveys successfully the atmosphere that surrounded Hillerman's detectives.

I just finished all the Leaphorn and Chee mysteries, and the plots are fresh in my mind. But readers who might have forgotten them will appreciate the plot summaries and excerpts. It was fun to see the iconic scenes associated with each novel. Not just natural wonders but picturesque towns, pueblos and trading posts.

I also enjoyed the anecdotes about Hillerman. For example, I was...

Wendy Meenenga: Tony Hillerman's daughter has skilfully brought together the landscape and the people who "inhabit" Hillerman's excellent mystery novels. Excerpts from the novels and information about places mentioned in the books together with Anne Hillerman's reminiscences of her father and his original comments form fitting frames to Don Strel's photos.
