Kindle Customer: I think the book was well written . It included historical facts that are not taught in history for black children. Gaining an understanding of the origin of the black church was illuminating and greatly appreciated. Although I enjoy the book there are points concerning true Christianity that I disagree with the author. Belief in Christ is not about a white or black Christ. It is about believing in Jesus being the only son of God and He is the Savior who willingly gave His life as a ransom for mankind. Thereby becoming a child of God by faith. Believing He died and God raised Him from the dead.

Paul: Henry Louis Gates Jr takes readers on an odyssey from religion and mythology in Africa to the expressions of African American religiosity familiar to us today. He reflects on the necessary intersections of faith, society, politics and economics and demonstrates how these find the nexus in the “Black Church”. An excellent read!

ohemp: Re: The Black Church by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. 🙌🏾❤️

I highly recommend reading of this absolutely superb book. Gates presentation for how ‘the black church’ began and evolved over many years is described in detail. It connected the dots for much of the research, etc. that I’ve done. The two-night PBS series of the same was outstanding, and the book is definitely complimentary as it pertains to providing more information in detail.
