in particular that of Thomas Jefferson and his clever daughter.

Amazon Customer: This is a well written accurate history by a writer who’s education is in the law. Written like a legal brief and does a good job of proving the proposition.

Janet G: Very interesting story written in a dull manner. The information is solid and clearly the research has been done, but this reads much like a research paper. I really wanted this to be interesting but found it really hard to get through.

Ally: I found this book really interesting. I thought that the author made good arguments for her conclusion. The book was written before the DNA evidence showed that Thomas Jefferson was the most likely father of Sally's children. A thought provoking book showing how relationships can't be normal when a system of slavery exists. Besides the obvious statement that owning another person is wrong, any truly loving relationship must remain hidden. Sally's sister, Mary, asked Jefferson to sell her to a white neighbor because they loved one another. Jefferson did sell her to the neighbor - although they lived as a married couple, the only legal arrangement that they were allowed to have in Virginia at that time was as owner and slave. We can't really know what Thomas and Sally felt about each other because any evidence in the form of letters or written journals, etc. seem to have been destroyed by Jefferson. However, Annette Gordon-Reed suggests an agreement between them, affection and trust, too, by Jefferson's actions in the freeing of their children and the fact that they (at least the sons) all played the violin.

Henry11: Annette Gordon-Reed was able to outline the facts about this controversy even before the DNA test underlined her point of view.
She tried with careful obervation to revise some histiorians views on this matter and gave more credit to Madison Hemmings descriptions. Her being a lawyer made the book even more reliable.

It is definitely worth reading.
