Discriminating Shopper: In preparation for our two week intensive Florence trip we wanted to dive deeper into learning about the paintings and frescos of the Renaissance. This book was on the recommended reading list for our tour in 2024. This beautiful coffee table book is the best recommendation of any of our study trips. I highly recommend this book of art and history.

Dog crazy: This book is excellent for the art lover. Its scope is huge and very specific. Paintings and frescos. Florence. 1250-1743. So don’t complain about the dearth of sculpture; if sculpture is in the book, it’s there to illustrate a further detail. The book itself is very well printed and bound; the case, to protect the spine, is also well-made. A corner of mine was very slightly damaged in shipping but that is not germane to its task of supporting the book when closed and standing on a shelf. No skin off my nose.
Ross King knows his onions (had to say it!) and the text is interesting and informative, if somewhat limited. I would peg this book for the already reasonably well-informed reader that is looking for a place to start new areas of interest. By this I mean that there isn’t a chapter devoted to, for example, Botticelli’s Spring or the Birth of Venus: one can find whole books on this specific topic. No, the book takes one to new areas and hopefully new artists and works that one hasn’t already seen that are related.
A number of other reviewers have taken exception to the ‘thumbnails’ of many of the details. Well, yes and no. The sheer volume of the...

Ms. S. Greenstone: Before going to the city I wanted a book to prepare for everything that is there so that I can make decisions of what I want to see and not waste time. This book comes with two maps of the city and beautiful illustrations of everything that’s there. It fully armed me for my trip

Christopher Verdick: Lovely book and nice reproductions. There are many pages where more minor works are tiled with more than 10 on a page, and even major works are presented with acres of whitespace around them on the page. I guess if you're advertising the complete paintings, there's no way around the tiling problem absent making the book unmanageably huge, but I wish the design was geared toward better highlighting the more important images in a way that gave them more real estate on the page.

mccormicky: How to feel less dumb about Italian art! Or just look like an artsy type with this absolute tome on your coffee table. And if all else fails you can throw it at big bugs. It’s a big book! Lots of photos. I didn’t care much for the tiny little detail pics of which there were too many in my opinion. Big book, small photos. Why? Another peeve was each chapter begins with a gorgeous big photo of sometimes a detail of a large painting or fresco or whatever and you would just have to continue through the chapter before you found the painting it matched and then could read the caption with the title of the artwork. Yes I am nitpicking. But it was annoying to me.

Dave: I have acquired The Louve, Vatican and the above. However, regardless how much I love art I am not foolish enough to pay over £70 for The Prado. ( plus, my wife would cut them off )
Florence is an absolutely amazing book. I admit you could go back and forward to the Louve and still not cover it but you might see the works your looking for. Now this is were the books are totally different.
Florence has its five main museums, obviously the great Uffizi but also twenty-eight additional museums and churches. I am not going to list the Artist's here but they obviously cover Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Titian Caravaggio and a great deal more. Even painters that are not that well known. Artist's that sent me over to an encyclopaedia for even more information on them because some of the work is beautiful.
So, to sum this book up you have 2,000 painted works from all the notable art institutions.
( Now I Cannot Be Wrong......Because I Read It At The Back Of The Bloody Box!)
But seriously. This is a very very beautiful book which should give you many many days to study and also read. But again the same old adage applies: where are you going to put it. Florence weighs...
