Kathryn SchulteKathryn Schulte: The main reason I am writing this review is because I read a comment in a review saying that this was a pocket-size book which could not be farther from the truth. I was honestly shocked at how big this book was when it arrived. It measures 13 1/2 inch by 10 inch by 1 3/4 inches. The thing weighs as much as a baby. It has massive, full size, high quality photos that take up full pages, some of full garments and some of close-ups. This is definitely a book that should be invested in and well-kept for a fashion historian, costumer, or just someone who likes clothes.

Amazon Customer: Such a large collection of beautiful items in 2 books, well labelled and chronicled to give the reader as much information as possible. There is extensive photos of Japanese fashion intspersed with images of the great European fashion houses which, given the type of collection, isn't surprising. All in all a great coffee table book.

Katrina K.: I have wanted this book for some time, but never got around to buying it. I finally bought a copy for my best friend as a Christmas gift, and I was able to view the book before giving it to her. It was so beautiful, I immediately ordered another copy for myself! These two books are such high quality, with tons of gorgeous photos, both of full length outfits, and also close ups of fabrics and details. The complete outfits are presented on very life like posable mannequins, complete with shoes, hats, gloves, everything! Also shows undergarments, so you know how those dresses got their shapes. Also includes Men's fashions, and those are just as beautiful as the women's. This set of books is worth every penny and then some. I think the price makes it a bargain for what you get. I highly recommend this beautiful set of books to every person who loves fashion and fashion history. Also a great resources for costumers.

Tasos Kotaras: I had already read many reviews of this book when I decided I needed it badly. I didn't regret it: I can now happily browse trough all those amazingly well taken photos of fine fashion speciments.
I only give 4 stars, for the sole reason that it took ages to reach my hands. I was promised to receive it around early or mid February, but it arrived late February. Moreover I could not find any meaningful trace information of my order.
If we add on this that this was my second attempt (the first one was somehow cancelled) I had to wait about two months for the book.
The condition of the book was superb, except from some minor wrinkles on the soft cover, maybe caused during the shipment, but in any case, giving the 1/4 of the price of a brand new one, it was really good value for money!

T. Jahanpour: Two big, heavy books full of colour photos. The antique garments of centuries past are presented in a such a way that, although the manequins are shot in neutrally set studios, with the simple addition of period-relevant wigs to the heads of the dummies, we get a strong sense of what a complete outfit would really look like on the body. There are also inserts of paintings to see these fashions in the context of art work of the time. Clear, close-up shots of modern fashion too. A very rich and useful resource.

heatherj: This is an amazing set of books. First of all they are big and heavy, not like other Taschen 25th anniversary book I have. Secondly, not only are they chock full of the most exquisite photographs, there is a detailed synopsis for the beginning of each century.
Did you know, for instance that after the French revolution, cottons became more popular and the silk industry went into decline? Napoleon was so concerned about this that he ordered his subjects to wear silk undergarments to formal occasions.
Did you know also, that in the nineteenth century, it was not uncommon for a woman to change her outfit seven or eight times a DAY? There was her morning dress, afternoon dress, visiting dress, evening dress for the theatre, ball gown, dinner dress, home gown for when she eventually got home and a nightgown to sleep in. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.
In addition to photographs of recreations of clothing from the past, there is also reproductions of beautiful print advertisements from the eras such as Schiaparelli.
Anyone that is remotely interested in fashion, history or both will enjoy them enormously and guard them jealously.
These books represent such value for...

Cathie B.: Being familiar with two earlier Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI) publications--The Evolution of Fashion (19th & 20th Century) and The Revolution of Fashion (18th Century)--I was excited to discover that Taschen had produced a new book covering fashions from the 18th to the 20th Century found in the KCI collection. Although I was concerned that this new book might just be a revision and compilation of photos from the two earlier exhibits (with, perhaps, some additional costumes to cover the second-half of the 20th Century), at 700+ pages, I figured there must be at least a few new entries.
The book arrived today and I have been unable to put it down. As soon as I opened the book, I knew that my fears had been unfounded. The new book not only includes costumes found in the earlier books, but includes detailed close-ups of those costumes and many new costumes. The depth of color and detail in the photos is extraordinary. (Taschen is well known for the quality of its publications.) Although the text accompanying the photos is generally quite minimal--limited in many cases to date, description and the inventory number of each piece--it will often include some historical information...
