DV8: Really nice book packed with a lot of interesting information about the ocean. Decent level of science presented although not too much to lose younger readers. Great vivid pictures and illustrations. I should have bought the hardback, this would make a nice coffee table read.

Paula: My daughter, who is absolutely obsessed with animal facts (never misses an episode of Wild Kratts, she is the kid who somehow retains detailed information unique to animal species), loves this book! The pictures are sharp and colorful, with just the right amount of text-book style informational images (food pyramids, etc.), that it conveys information in an engaging way without feeling like studying. This encyclopedia uses language that is informative and not overly complicated, yet not simple like a typical children's book. Please note my daughter is six, but is a gifted reader with an high aptitude and understanding of language and phonetic awareness. I mention this because this book may be more appropriate for the 8-10 year old range, and may be a little challenging for a typical six year old. Nevertheless, it is one of those books that you won't want to soon get rid of because Smithsonian did that great a job producing, editing, and publishing it. I absolutely love that it addresses current events such as global warming and how it affects our oceans and earth, and that it also addresses a less rigid, old-school understanding of animal relationships (predator-prey, food web...
