Yvonne Wieck: Super cheap and the most helpful book I've found for self-teaching the violin! Though, I played in middle school, after ten years, I forgot almost everything. I had no problem learning everything again from the beginning with this! I highly recommend this. It teaches fingering with pictures included, rhythm, and even small details on reading measures with lots of tunes for practice.

liz: I use this book for all my beginner violin students. Love that it progresses from just A and D strings and plucking with quarter notes and quarter rests, to adding more strings, bowing, and more rhythms. It has the note names written in for the first few weeks of lessons and then takes them out. Most students are okay with reading the notes by then. I don't like method books that start out with lots of rhythms in the very beginning.
any edition of EE book 1 is fine, they are all 95% the same

Cat: I've used this title during middle school when I was playing the clarinet. When I decided to pick up the violin again, I went for a book in this series. This series is great for beginners, as it gives a step-by-step intro. It starts with plucking the strings to get an idea of the notes, then goes on to bowing. It's great for people who want to learn by themselves.
