R. L. Be: Since ESBIT is both immediate heat source and fire starter, I collect dried roots, stems & burnable debris that I find while walking (in all terrain) to provide the heat & duration desired. Rubbing soap on the bottom of the pot prior means easier cleanup. The round Coghlan style fuel can be stored in electrolyte tab (NUUN style) cannisters to isolate odor. Heat conservation is key for this fuel. Water or pre-soaked food carried next to your body enters the cooking pot already warm & using a pot LID are two examples. Preventing convective heat loss due to wind passing through the stove is another. Stacking rocks around the stove, setting up in a depression, & using carbon felt or aluminum foil for wind shielding are some methods used. Lighting in high wind can be eased by using a plasma lighter, cotton/vaseline balls, jute twine char cloth & w/ aforementioned breaks help too. ESBIT is ZEN - Conservation of energy &

DGM: These product have allowed me to start a fire in the most extreme weathers and even in the rain. They produce enough heat and last long enough to start a fire. I have even used it to start my grill. I definitely would be buying some more of these. I have even given some to my family members and they love them too.

Vivian Collins: I didn't realize Esbit made different sizes?? I was expecting the ones sealed in a foil/plastic packet. These are half that size and not sealed in anything. Maybe not good for backpackers who need waterproof packaging but they work for me. One for a mocha pot Espresso, one for the milk.

Morgan: Okay, there are some mixed reviews about this product so let's clear the air. Some people wrote in that they used numerous cubes and could not make water boil etc... I couldn't figure out how it could take 4 cubes as 28 minutes to boil a cup of water until I realized- they must have been using the cubes one at a time!!

When I'm backpacking, like a lot of people, I bring instant oats, quick cook noodles like Lipton, ramen, and things like five minute couscous and rice. Add some peanut butter or canned tuna, even dehydrated meat and fruit to any of these and you have a pretty good meal! I'm also a huge fan of hot beverages like tea and coco.

Plan ahead- fold up a foot or so of tin foil and place in the bottom of your cooking pot( I use the esbit three piece solid fuel cook set with a 16oz capacity). Use this as a wind block if needed. When winter camping use snow as natures wind block! Now here's the trick: use 4-6 cubes to start, NOT 1! Stack them in the bottom of your cook stove and light them all at once. With four cubes I can bring water to a light boil after 6 minutes. The total useful heat time lasts from 12-14 minutes, which is plenty of time for me to cook an...
