Jeff Zimmerman: Great piece of classic American literature. The Hemingway library editions are beautiful but I hate that the notes and images are in the middle of the book. I’d prefer them not interrupt the story. Beside that great edition and the images and extras bring it to life even more.

Susan Deanne: The chapters and the stories from the Spanish Civil War are especially interesting to learn about. And Hemingway’s way of writing is superb!

Frank H. Thomas, Jr.: I liked his descriptions of the countryside in Spain. I liked the manner in which he developed characters, especially Robert and Maria, and the tragic way Robert's life ended. The writing fully engaged my senses.

Lannmva: We choose this book for our book club based on this novel being a classic and the recent PBS documentary on his life.
Personally, I found it a little amazing that this book became a bestseller considering what publishing companies want from authors today. The novel itself is actually quite short, a hair less than 200 pages. At first, it seems to wander introducing the characters, the psychologically wounded like Jake and Brett and those too naive to understand their lives.
The ending of the book makes the novel, it is incredibly poignant and sad about what might have been but never could be. These characters, like Vietnam war veterans, came back from WW1 emotionally wounded. They indulged themselves in drinking, sex, and deeply immersive events such as the bull fights in Pamplona, all tastefully done compared to today's standards.
Hemingway's style, which he referred to as the "iceberg" theory, was quite different for its time—realistic dialogue and action that slowly revealed the characters and exotic settings like Paris where the streets travelled and restaurants and bars were all named and Pamplona where the reader is pulled into the festival, bull running, the art...
