Barry J.: Because I'm a tool guy, and because I have worked a bunch of years in the electronics industry, I have a variety of ways of measuring any of the normal electrical things around the house. That said, I'm REALLY happy I bought this tester as part of a GFI replacement project. It allowed an untrained-but-smart person to be able to shout at me when the breaker associated with the bad GFI got flipped. It saved a bunch of running back and forth and provided a totally unambiguous indication of whether it was safe to handle the wires in question.
This is also the kind of tool/meter that I'd ordinarily dismiss as a 'dumbed-down' thingie for the non-electically-aware masses. Don't you be so smug in your knowledge of how to use your snazzy True RMS DVM, but instead breathe a moment and realize that saving time and being safe is on virtually all occasions more important than that 3rd dgit to the right of the decimal point. This 'thingie' did EXACTLY what it was supposed to do and significantly sped up the process of getting a new, good GFI connected to our dishwasher.
We no longer have a pile of dirty plates and flatware on the counter, and this is the tester that made it happen. Very...

The Tiki Lab: I'm no electrician and I'm blind - so this thing is GREAT for me! Maybe I'm just too cheap or maybe it's being too stubborn but I'mturning my stupid house into a smart home. Part of this is installing smart switches in the place of my existing stupid switches. Smart switches, as opposed to the stupid ones, require a load, line and a neutral line with an optional ground. Since my home was built in the 50's it's safe to say there are no neutral lines in any of my switch boxes, which is a no-brainer. Determining line vs. load as a blind guy without this magic wand means turning off the breaker, connecting the 2 black wires and making a neutral, then turning the breaker back on. If it works then cool, if not then it's do the whole thing all over again. Oddly enough it turns out that every time I try I guess the wrong combination, on occasion more than once too. So if you don't know how electricity works or if you're a blind apprentice level electrician this is a must have! Seriously if I can just go pull all of the switches out without disconnecting and find, then label the hot wire I can kill my service disconnect breaker and replace all of my switches at one time. Simply wrapping a...

Andy: UPDATE: a few months later - I turned off the breaker but this still reads electricity in the wire. I was sure that the electricity was off and I was right. false readings all over. Not reliable any more.

I just got a townhouse and bought this tester because I wanted to piggy back all the aluminum wiring with copper.
For the first 3 days it worked flawlessly - it may have saved my life! I tripped the breaker for the garbage disposal switch (at least that's what it said on it) but I wanted to make sure and this tester started yelling at me that the wire is still hot. And indeed it was - the writing in the breaker box was mixed up. Wheeeew....!
Every now and then it beeps once or so if you move it too quickly or bump it. But I got used to that.
Yesterday, though, while trying to install a GFCI outlet in the bathroom, it started beeping again, but consistently. I knew for sure the right breaker was off, but I ended up switching the main breaker, to be sure. The tester was still beeping for 4-5 seconds, which indicates a hot wire. I replaced the outlet and there was no electricity, so I can't really rely on this tester any more. I need another one, maybe more expensive...

Cathy381: Works as advertised. Very sensitive. It can tell a hot wire from a cold wire. Only 4 stars because it does not come with any form of translation from number of bars to approximate volts. I get 6 bars including the last two red from the hot side of an electric outlet. I get 2 green bars from anything electric including the "cold" side of an electric outlet, the USB charger for my phone, or getting close to any electric appliance. The tester is very sensitive as I could tell the hot from cold side of many power cords through the insulation. It even gives me 2 green bars from most phone wires, the connectors on coax for the cable, and the DC powered cable box. I even got 2 green bars from both ends of coax that happened to be laying in a cord tangle with TV power cord. So I can assume that 6 bars (with 2 red) indicates 110 volts and 2 green bars indicates at least 12 volts of DC or AC including background power radiation.

Here's my problem. We've been having problems with our cable pixilating and/or cutting off on some channels most evenings between 7 and 9 PM. I had the cable company out and the tech showed me where he was detecting power coming back down the cable from 2 of...
