W Morris: The whistle works OK not very loud the compass works if you get it exactly perfectly level in tap it a few times it eventually turns north. The dropbox seems like it will be OK and it will probably be used for kayaking and serve the purpose of being our state mandated whistle for floating the rivers.

MK Bartell: It's waterproof. I checked. Don't screw the cap on tight or it pushes out the gasket. The gasket is crap. The whistle is loud. The compass is good enough to keep you from walking in circles, but you have to hold it perfectly level. The mirror is silly. The little fero rod is a joke, but it's a real one, so it's something I guess. Be careful you don't crossthread the cap.

If you understand the exact level of cheesiness, it does check off some boxes for an emergency kit. It's pretty much what I expected.

Judson: I ordered these for my emergency bags. I have a family of 6 and purchasing everything we need has been a challenge. The price on this multi pack was right. They seem sturdy enough. The whistle is loud and clear. I like the waterproof section for matches. I feel like the fire steel and compass are a little gimmicky. But, it is worth the price. Now we have our emergency whistles!

ahatch: I definitely would not rely on this for survival, it's really more of a toy. That said, I purchased it for our Cub Scouts Webelos den, and it will work well. When the kids are out hiking in city parks with adults, this is perfect. It will teach the Scouts responsibility to remember to pack it in their hiking packs, but if it breaks, it's not a big deal.

When they cross over to Scouts BSA and start hiking in larger parks and doing more camping, I will buy much better quality whistles with extras.

I purchased 6. The mirrors on all of them have come unglued, and the caps are difficult to screw back on. I expect I'll need to help the Scouts replace the caps a lot. The compass doesn't seem very accurate, but will work as a great training tool for the Scouts to at least find approximate N, E, S, and W. Don't rely on it for much more than that. I haven't quite figured out how you are supposed to use the strike area to start a fire; it's just a piece of plastic. That might be a good thing though since the Scouts are too young to be starting fires without close adult supervision.

As long as you have low expectations of this product, you'll be happy.

Andy: Arrived in a timely manner. It has space inside it to hold a few waterproof matches or magnesium dust for fire starting thanks to the flint on the outside. Appears to be waterproof.

Amazon Customer: Mirror fell out, so had to glue it back in, Other than that works fine , room to store a fire making kit. and a bit of tinder so Ideal for Kayaking.
