Jadkins: My daughter was assigned Maya Angelou for Black History Month. This biography was perfect for my little reader to learn more about this literary icon. It even addressed some of the more tragic moments in Ms. Angelou's life, but in a very age-appropriate way.

Laura Fernald: I adore these Who was... Who is... books. Maya Angelou was the topic of my daughter’s last research project. This book was perfect for her to read and gain info.

Mallory: I love this series! This is the first I have bought in the "who was.." series, but I am buying more. I read this book to my 5 year old daughter at bedtime, a few pages at a time, and she was captivated. We just finished it and now she is eager to read about Frida Kahlo.
These books are really focused towards age 8-10, and there was some content that I chose to skip over because my 5 yo is not mature enough for it yet. But I was able to read her most of the book. We will keep it of course, and when she is older she can read the whole thing. I wanted to introduce her to the treasure that was Maya Angelou, and this book was wonderful. I also felt that, at her age, reading her a longer "big girl" book over the course of several weeks helps build the skill of sustaining interest in a topic.
