Kenneth L. Matheny: This is a book that warms your heart without being overly sentimental. It is not a story in the traditional sense, but a reminiscence of the people, places, and simple joys of a child's Christmas that will resonate with anyone who remembers fondly the Christmases of one's past. Unlike Truman Capote's excellent "A Christmas Memory," there is not a traditional plot. Rather, the little book's coherence comes from vivid images of many Christmases from the author's childhood in Wales. Thomas doesn't idealize his past, but he clearly loves it. "A Child's Christmas in Wales" fits into the genre of local color, describing a place and time long gone but lovingly remembered. I've been reading this book every Christmas season for a while now, and even though I didn't grow up in Wales, Thomas's memories of the magic of Christmas warm my heart and get me in the Christmas spirit. This edition is wonderfully illustrated. A gem of a book, and if you love the Christmas season and remember the magic of youth, you will, like me, want to read it every year when Christmas comes around. This lovely book would make a perfect Christmas gift to anyone who loves the Christmas season.
