Eco-Friendly Luxury: Emerson CF550DMORB Ceiling Fan

Ayumi K.: Absolutely beautiful. High quality and attractive. My complaints were that it made a rubbing sound at first but I let it sit running overnight which seemed to cute itself. Also, the attachment with the blades is slightly off centre to the main base but at a distance it’s not noticeable. I also love the wall switch. This really is a great fan. I absolutely love it.

D. Prorok: This is, by far, the most expensive fan I've ever purchased so it's disappointing that it failed after less than three years.

The fan has a lot going for it: it's large, attractive, energy efficient, and quietly moves a reasonable amount of air in a large high-ceilinged room. Unfortunately, controlling it was never easy. Many times it took multiple button pushes for a fan speed change or light on/off to register. Finally, after three years, it wouldn't respond at all. No amount of resetting and trying to repair the transmitter with the fan would work.

On the bright side, the fan does appear to be built for serviceability. A few screws was all it took to remove the upper motor cover. Once I looked inside, I spotted the cause of the reception problems: the antenna wire was tightly tie-wrapped into a bundle of AC input and DC output wires and then tucked under some more metal parts. In effect, the antenna was well-shielded from the RF remote signals: poor assembly at the factory, but easily fixed (if the fan still worked at all).

Technical support has been outsourced to a company called Carroll Parts in Kansas City, MO. I called and it didn't take long to reach a...

SirReal: The fan looks great and is high quality (as far as I can tell). Airflow is more than adequate for a 15' x 20' master bedroom. Absolutely no fan noise beyond what's unavoidable in order to move air around a room. LED downlight is adequate as well and can be dimmed (or not, via a switch setting). Installation effort was normal for this sort of fan and was surprising smooth (no tinkering or workarounds required). I might have gotten lucky, but there is absolutely no detectable wobble and thankfully no need to go thru the balancing process.

Wall "remote" controls are straightforward but understand that these controls don't detach from the wall). We wanted a handheld remote as well, and the SR600 did the trick. You just have to program the frequency to match the wall control programming. I had also purchased an RCK55 receiver as it wasn't clear if that was required -- it isn't as the fan has an integrated receiver -- and so that will get returned.

So, so far, worth every penny.

Eric: Fan works well, when we can get it to turn on. Most of the time it is unusable as the fan will not respond to the in-wall remote control, we purchased a new remote control and worked for about 6 months and now is doing same thing. Think better options would be a hunter or Hampton Bay, fan quality may not be as good, but at least it will function and there are alternatives for remotes if needed.

Helena: Great fan especially if you can find it on sale. You do get what you pay for. Solidly built and easy to install. The toughest part would be to ensure that the electrical box you are mounting it to is rated for the weight of the fan. Otherwise, the fan has been great. We use it while we sleep and it is silent. Controls are intuitive but I would recommend ordering up the remote as well. It's too bad that it doesn't come with one for a fan that costs more than $500. Not a very expensive item that they could have included.

kfractal: When I purchased I didn't realize it came with a wall-mount remote control. It's a switch-replacing unit. I'm fairly comfortable with that but others might not be. Especially if using on a 3-way setup. But, the fan looks and runs great so far. Nice speed variability and light control. The control itself isn't the most intuitive wrt its icons and perceived functionality. But once you know what's up it's fine.

The lights are halogen. I was hoping to put LEDs in there but I'm not yet able to find mini-candelabras to fit. But, because the dimmer works well it's not a big issue for me (I use other lights for primary).

Clearthought: This is our second Emerson Fan. We also own the CF955BS fan.

The fan is quiet. Other than the air it moves, there is no noise.

The installation is straight forward. Both fans were balanced right out of the box. The blades are plastic, which might sound cheap, but they do not swell in the summer humidity like the older veneer press board blades. I prefer the CFL lights on the CF955BS fan to the Halogen bulbs provided in this unit, but that is mostly an energy efficiency complaint, not a comment on the lighting quality.

The fan does not have a hand held remote control. I have young children so I consider this a big plus. Instead the fan has a control that mounts into the light switch. There is no need for a battery, instead the unit is wired instead of a traditional switch. The control unit will dim the lights, change the speed, and reverse the direction of the fan. This does mean the control unit needs a little space in the box.
