@DTOM _1775: This book is not the standard letter size book (8.5 x 11"). Also, the text was scaled down to fit on the numbered pages that were laid out in the original published book....so it is a bit difficult to read for me and I have 20/20 vision uncorrected.
As far as the content, it is typical of DoD content. Something I do prefer. No fluff, no sales pitches for other products or entities, just information.
I'm using the material as a refresher for advanced Amateur Radio licensing at the General and Extra level. Other than the small text, it's exceeding the information regarding electricity needed to pass those exams. Most of the information is extraneous for those purposes but as I said before, I do prefer information over fluff.

Nick D: Tl;dr: In many ways this is just an aging, well written book on electronics. In some ways it's much more than that. I deducted a star due to the printing, which can make it a bit frustrating to read at times. Overall I found it to be prerty comprehensive, very to the point, and effective in it's delivery.
What keeps this book relevant are two things. First, not THAT much has changed. Yes there are some materials that are different. Yes I did do a nasally laugh when the manual warned not to wear hobnail boots around live electrical. And yes, the chapter on batteries could be called dated. But, like most other engineering fields... what was true 50 years ago is still true now. Second is that so much of what we work on today was built at the time of this book's writing. So you will gain knowledge from it's perspective and it may enable you to reach that sweet sweet understanding of what the person that built what you're looking at was thinking about at the time.
What makes it interesting is the historical value of it. You tend to step out of the present while reading it. For those of us who have older relatives that served in the armed forces, you can kind of feel a...

Victor L. Nazaire: Basic Electricity Prepared by the Bureau of Naval Personnel
by Dover Publications, Inc. in its Second revised and enlarged
edition provides Solid Knowledge.
My copy of the Dover edition , first published in 1970, is an
Unabridged re-publication of the Second revised and Enlarged
(1969) edition of the work originally published by the U.S.
Government Printing Office in 1960.
Basic Electricity has been prepared by the Bureau of Naval
Personnel, Department of the Navy, as Rate TRAINING Manual.
Basic Electricity is written for persons of the U.S.Navy and Naval
Reserve whose duties require them to have a Knowledge of the
Fundamentals of Electricity.
A Study Guide chart is included to provide readily available
information on chapters applicable to the various ratings.
This RATE Training Manual has been prepared by the Navy Training
Publications Center and the Aviation Electrician's Mate School and
by the Training Publications Division of the Naval Personnel Program
Support Activity and finally the Naval EXAMINING Center.
So, no question, it provides SOLID Knowledge.

C. Dee Throckmorton: I am a 76 year-old man who tries to maintain brain function by studying schollarly topics. DC electricity is the present obsession,so the knowledge can be applied to an entheusiasm for solar panels.
I bought several texts to be able to benefit from different author's versions of how to solve the variety of math problems. I was never satisfied with any of them, so kept looking.
On Amazon Books was listed an old US Navy Textbook, used by the entire Seventh Fleet, which included my ship, during the Korean war.
Feeling good about the idea, I purchased it.
The other texts, all partly read, now sit on a shelf.
The Navy book, talks to your thinking like one man speaking to another, covers EVERY topic in such a thorough manner that I never have used any of the other resource books . . . which were all originally bought, one at a time to be the only text.
The book speaks logic and reason to this old mind, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be as good as the military Men and Woman who run our present day technology in the war zones.

No Face: I bought this book while taking classes as an Electrician, I didn't even knew the difference between these two. This book however, made that difference between them apparent. The complexity of what Electrical Engineers go through, I have nothing but the outmost respect for them.
