Amazon Customer: My second graders absolutely LOVED this book. The illustrations are vibrant and the story is inspiring. Great mentor text for author’s purpose, communities, art, etc.

Luluru: I read this as the mystery guest in my granddaughter's first grade classroom. It is such a beautiful book with a beautiful message. I then gifted the book to her...she told me, "Grandma, I really, really love that book!" which was worth it all. Lovely, especially to encourage the young artist and encourage neighborhood beautification. I was hesitant because I wanted this time to be very special and, with this lovely book, it was.

Lara M. Deloza: I'm always looking for quality picture books for my preschooler that show diversity without diversity being what the book is about. We got this because it was the 2018 Read for the Record pick. At first my son didn't want anything to do with it, because he doesn't like new things. But they read it at school and I read it at home and after repeated exposure he adored it and asked me to read it multiple times each day. He started reciting lines and we talk about it every time he paints. I'd initially gotten it from the library (because of him sometimes being adverse to new things) but when we returned it he was so disappointed that I immediately purchased a copy. When he's older we'll dive more into the true story that inspired the book. Plus, the illustrations are gorgeous! A great addition to any home or school library that will age well with the reader(s) in your life.

M. A. Butler: This is a fabulous book about the power of art and creativity. In full support of that theme, it offers beautiful illustrations by Rafael Lopez (who also stunningly illustrated "Drum Dream Girl" by Margarita Engle.) His multiculturally-flavored art is happy and textured and fun, I just love it. I can't understand how he has escaped getting a Caldecott award so far, but it is clearly in his future. (Google him to see some great videos about how he creates his art.)
I kidded myself that I bought this for my granddaughter, it was really for me. This book is a charming work of art on all levels. Even the tactile quality of the book jacket is luscious, a testament to the commitment to quality on all levels in this gem of a book. I should just buy a dozen or two for all the gifts I need to give this year...I want all my loved ones to read it, it offers a wonderful message for all ages!
