Lee Tolliver: Only reason it lands 4 stars is because there was only so much about shells. Wish there was more to read and learn about in this book. Other than that, it is an excellent read and I recommend it to any first time beach comber.

Teri Pizza: I confess, I originally ordered the book because of it pretty cover. I thought it would look great next to my shell collections...and, it does. However, it is also full of good info on most of the shells I've found on Florida beaches: from Panama City Beach, to Fort Myers Beach, to Daytona Beach it got them covered and gave me new info to boot! Great little book and would be perfect as a house-warming gift to new residents moving any where near the Florida coast.

savvy shopper: This book is fascinating! I love the way it's written, the history of collecting shells, the differences in them and the beautiful pictures, which makes it easy to discern what shells have been collected and how to identify them. We gave it as a gift along with a collection jar and they make the perfect gift. The couple LOVE IT and have a conversation corner in their home set up to show off their shells, collected over many years and the book that helps bring it all together.

Renee BurgardRenee Burgard: This book is awe-inspiring ... each description is full of surprising science, history, and stories about the shells the sea offers up and the people who collect them. The illustrations are gorgeous. Even the most experienced beachcomber will learn something -- who knew how fierce sea stars are, or how scallops "clap" across the ocean floor? Treat yourself and your beach loving friends to Burgard's universe with the sea and its shells at its heart ... all who read it will come away enriched -- more connected to the natural world.

catherine azzam: I bought this book to use as a house gift while visiting a friend at the beach, but ended up keeping it for myself (my friend will have to wait for her copy)! The text is a wonderful combination of useful information and whimsical interpretation. Anna Burgard’s writing illuminates the practical details of each shell and its former occupant, fleshed out with entertaining anecdotes and cultural context. Jill Ditner’s exquisite watercolor renderings are delightful as well; they are clearly the work of an artist who not only paints accurately but with great sensitivity.
The result is a truly enjoyable book that inspires as it educates.

Nita Mackintosh: i wanted a shell book just for ordinary shells found on Britain's beaches ....but half the book was taken up with obscure finds and the write ups were overly profound.
