Les H.: Good book

JM: I have been following Derrick Josi on fb for three or four years now, so I was worried that his book An Industry Worth Fighting For would be repetitive. As it turns out the book is just as interesting and informative as his videos, only he gets to really expand on each topic in book form. I knew some of the information already but it was great to find out more of the background info (like why he got into social media in the first place) and read more in depth info on how he runs the dairy and the farm (I didn't know he hires a farmer to come handle the corn crop every year, it makes sense.) Overall the book is not a vet manual or business guide to dairy farming, but rather life as Derrick Josi and his family lives it with a lot of good information about the animals and the business, all while debunking the lies and distortions that are passed around the activist circles. I think he does a great job laying out why and how dairy farms do what they do and how much flack farmers get for their efforts. Josi doesn't sugar coat or misrepresent anything he does and it is refreshing to read. No hidden agendas, no persuading or manipulating, just lays out the facts of life in animal ag in a...

L. A. Rogers: Some books you speed through, some you mull over and some are like having a conversation with a friend round the kitchen table over a cup of tea (or coffee).

So when @tdf_honest_farming
announced he was writing a book, I was keen to get a copy. Having followed Derrick for many years on social media, he really is the most honest farmer out there.

Whether you're a farmer or a consumer, his book is written in such a way for everyone can understand. Covering a whole range of topics (most of which he discusses online), as always Derrick is completely honest and transparent - from artificial insemination, cow and calf separation, how milk gets from cow to your fridge and environmental issues.

Busting myths, dispelling rumours and providing clear factual information, Derrick does what he does best - building links between farming and the consumer.

Well done, I look forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve next.

Randombrood: What a brilliant book, dispels lots of myths and if people could be bothered to find the truth we would be better of. I love the videos and I loved this book, thank you.

David FrickeDavid Fricke: Steve Olivas (a Twitter acquaintance) suggested I buy a copy. My answer at the time was, “Ok, but my only link to that world is having a brother with one cow.” Thereupon, the cow promptly calved, making it TWO cows, and a liar of me.
Barring the remarkable timing of my brother’s first calf, I would still like to retract my initial statement. OF COURSE I have a link to that world! There is always a gallon of milk in my refrigerator, isn’t there? And it has been a wonderful thing to dive into Derrick Josi’s world, and get a clearer picture of where this particular food comes from. It is a world of people, plants, and animals, technology and regulations, mind-boggling tenacity, and hard work. The milk did not arrive in my refrigerator by magic, and it feels good to replace such obliviousness with reality.
A further bonus: having gleaned some education from Derrick Josi’s book, I now have some worthwhile questions to ask my ‘broski’ as we sit ‘round the fire. For example, “What do you do when Babette’s hooves grow too long?” and “Do you have to do the A.I. thing yourself?” And from there, education grows deeper still! (My brother’s firsthand account...

Jo: Anybody who follows Derrick Josi's TDF Honest Farming on Facebook (and other platforms) will be aware of his mission to inform people of the truth about dairy farming, to refute the common claims of activists, and will be familiar with his dry wit. He has now dispelled many of the common claims used by activists, as well as giving a glimpse of life on his dairy farm, in plain, easy to understand language in this book. Each scientific statement is referenced, which gives the reader further opportunities to study the industry.
Derrick's sense of humour shines through throughout this book, and I was regularly laughing as I was reading it. His section on cow-tipping actually had tears of laughter running down my face!
This book would be great for anybody who is keen to find out whether there is any truth in the claims of AR activists. Derrick doesn't just rubbish those claims (and even admits to any truth in them), but gives his truth, and backs it up with science. It is also a great read for anybody who would like to find out about life on a dairy farm.
My one gripe with the book would be that he needed a better proof-reader, but that is a minor issue.

DonSchindler: I wish this book had been written a few years ago when I first started my career in dairy. The insights this book delivers are tremendous about the life of a modern US dairy farmer. Derrick's candid and conversational tone makes for easy reading with lots of laughs along the way. It's very entertaining as well as transparent and raw.
The attacks Derrick experiences online from activists are real and ugly. It's unfortunate that social media is the weapon of choice for these groups and they cause many dairy farmers (actually almost all farmers experience this kind of abuse from activists) to not want to engage with the public because of these attacks. These misleading and misinformed food terrorists do not want you to have choice about what you choose to eat.
But that didn't stop Derrick from continuing to use social media to tell his dairy farm story and now there's a book that dives in deep to why Derrick does what he does and why the dairy industry is worth defending. Just like Derrick, I believe the public has a right to eat as much cheese, ice cream, butter, yogurt and sour cream and drink as much milk as it wants. Read Derrick's book, learn about the industry that feeds...

Amazon Customer: IT was a very accurate read about dairy farming. Very educational for non farming persons.

Amazon Customer: The author gives an honest assessment of his industry and the challenges it faces daily. The Josi family has been in the dairy business for a hundred years and each new generation carries the knowledge forward adjusting to the modernization in their business. A good explanation of all you need to know about the dairy industry and the many, many challenges they are dealing with on a regular basis. At the end of the day the cows still need to be milked twice a day to provide a nutritious product for the consumer.

S. Zeidler: I was born and raised in a major metropolitan city. I am a retired clinical scientist that spent my career in laboratories on the East Coast. How I was connected by the Facebook algorithm to videos by a dairy farmer on the West coast is a mystery, but I'm so glad it happened. I was immediately captivated by his love for his "girls" and raw honesty of life on a farm. But I don't like to spend much time on FB so I bought the book the minute I heard it was released. I thought it would be what I call "brain candy". Between research papers and medical books I would throw in a fun, easy "beach read" to relax my brain.
I was incredibly surprised in two ways:
(Before anyone takes this the wrong way it is not that I thought he wasn't intelligent, not at all! His intelligence is obvious in his videos so don't twist this)
First - I was expecting stories about his girls and life on a farm.
But what I got was a well researched, heavily referenced overview of the dairy industry and the challenges they face from activists and government interventions.
Second - I cannot remember the last book I read that made me laugh out loud so many times.
It was educational and...
