Kindle Customer: he shows all his horses blanketed and i dont believe this is necessary and possibly harmful causing the horses to have to remain indoors as they do not develope a winter coat to protect themselves in the winter weather and makes it necessary to coat them. i never coated my horses and they were always very healthy with no issues in dealing with upstate new york winters in the catskill area.

Western WA Arab owner: I had been aware of Cherry Hill's book for a long while. Looking back over the last couple of years since I bought my own small acreage, I should have gotten it sooner for sure. There are so many money pitfalls and I have already fallen into some of them. The book is definitely the ideal and one can drop a ton of money trying to be a perfectionist. But, descriptions of items like footing, fencing, design of stalls and turn-out areas are well written and you don't want to skimp or you will end up being sorry and having to revisit them. It's extremely important to take into consideration your climate and worst case scenarios: flooding, fire, snow, major storms... Planning ahead when you are starting out is just smart and this book can help. Don't forget your local government and complying with regs. (You can also tap your county extension agent for help.) Actually, the list of stuff to be done is pretty endless. I am in the middle of it all right now and had already completed some of the items on my to-do list, but even so, the book is very helpful and lays it all out. Having always boarded my horses, there sure are a lot of details to learn and become conversant with as the sole...

stephanie laakso: I bought this book because I am taking a course in Equine Science Diploma from Guelph University Online. Otherwise the book is for very basic or beginner and you don't learn many interesting or new things that make you consider buying this book. dont get me wrong! This book is written clearly and common sense like, but it does have those basic things we can all learn from and base our horse knowledge off of.

K. Baylis: A really satisfying book to have in your hands; glossy, thick, quality, heavy. Everything I was expecting and probably more. I have recently leased eight acres of land to graze my two horses on, and I am learning as I go at how to best manage that land. I am considering it practice as we save up for our own 3-5 acre property. With that in mind, I purchased this book to get advice from someone experienced with managing smaller properties.
The content within this book is better than I imagined. It has everything from budget templates, sample costing, barn diagrams and layouts, beautiful huge colour pictures with captions and descriptions, easy to read text written in a way that anyone can understand. My personal favorites are the sample land layouts; they provide a before and after diagram of what a property looks like (for example eight acres with just a house and garage on it), and then it proposes the changes to best suit that property (where paddocks could be fenced, gravel paths or driveways laid, a barn or stables placed, an arena, etc) to best utilise that particular land. It offers several different types, all displaying ways to use each property to their best...
