AbbyAbby: Never in my life have I found an author (or in this case authors) whose work i enjoyed reading so much .. I'm pretty sure the only other person is Vernon Howard (a mystic, expert in esoteric psychology and children's author) So no connections there lol!

Where the crawdads sing was great but this is fantastic too.. It's not hard to see that the character Kya Clark was a direct inspiration of The Owens themselves.. their tenacity and cleverness, sharpness, wit whilst they navigated their experiences in Africa!

I'm black african born and bred yet I don't have even a quarter of the knowledge these 2 white Americans have of the landscape of places like the kalahari let alone that it had seasons like winter or even that fire unfortunately set by men could wipe out hundreds of miles of area.. only for it to grow back again.. the resilience of nature fighting against man's selfish behaviour..

I'm blown away by their passion, for nature and the determination to carry out scientific study of wild animals in remote, isolated dangerous places.

Also their respect for the culture and people they found themselves with. I saved many keywords that I use the kindle...

Kindle Customer: An important read to understand the ecosystems of the Kalahari, its conservation efforts still necessary today, I loved the sounds of animals, their full stomachs bulging, the social interaction within the group in response to survival in the Kalahari. It was all that I had recently seen. Thank you.

Superior.Shores: What an appropriate title. I believe that this is the first book written by the Owens, mark and Delia. “The Eye of the Elephant” is the sequel. My mistake was not knowing that there was an order for the two books.
This book introduces the reader to the Kalahari, the animals, the politics, but most important, Mark & Delia. Knowing them, after reading this book brings the dedication of their research and their lives together. I reflected back what I was doing in the mid to late 70’s/early 80’s, and while these two were working so hard and sacrificing so much, I was contributing nothing to the world. Yes, other than there data accumulation, they walked away with so much more.
I am amazed at the knowledge this book reveals about animals, many of us just take for granted.
Well done in so many ways. I wish there was a sequel to “The Eye of the Elephant”.

JanG. - byrdgrl: How and where do I start with this review? I guess, in keeping with the review title I will say that Cry of the Kalahari almost made me cry, from lack of sleep. I would settle in with the intention of reading for one hour and find myself still reading after 3. It's rare for me to find books these days that I don't want to put down.

I think I expected just light, entertaining reading when I chose to download this book but that is not what I got. Yes, there are moments of humor for sure but there is so much more. The authors have done an absolutely amazing job of giving us a wealth of information on the animals of the Kalahari. You don't just get a scrap of information you learn about species and about the individual animals studied. I was drawn in so much that I felt like I was right there observing and interacting myself. The authors also manage to reveal enough of who they are as individuals to make you wish you could be a part of their team but do it in away that the book doesn't feel like ego was involved in the writing.

If you love animals, especially wildlife, if you love nature, if you care about conservation, this is a book for you. Even if you just have a...
