Tom: Very good cookbook for hunters. I made a Cajun recipe right away out of this cookbook, everyone in the faily loved the food and the venison was so tender it was amazing. Don't hesitate, get the book.

If you are looking for new ways to cook venison other than just grinding it, this will be a dream come true… I actually changed completely how I butcher my deer because I love using these recipes for larger cuts 😄
(The braised shoulder recipe is to die for 😉)

Kleinbeck: In addition to Hank Shaw's abundance-focused and empowering "Hunt, Gather, Cook" ethos, this book reminds us that venison may be the most truly global food: There are native species of deer that have sustained people on every green continent for all of human history. With Hank's equal respect for wild foods from every corner of the earth, this book expands SO far beyond steaks and burgers (though it provides best practices and great tips for these items too). Because of BBM I try a new way of making venison from a different country nearly every week, and absolutely every recipe has been excellent. With every deer I try new butchery techniques or different cuts with ideas I've gotten from BBM, which has made me better able to harvest and use more of every animal. I've purchased at least a half dozen copies of this book for friends and family, and always keep a spare in my house to give away when the opportunity arises. If you smell what Hank is cooking and you like what you learn, I'll add that the Hunt Gather Cook Facebook community is another great place to learn, swap techniques, and discuss new ways that you may wish to enjoy wild foods. Amazon Customer: I bought this as a gift for a deer hunting family friend. I was very impressed with the creativity of the recipes, and think that anyone that buys this will love it. I plan to buy another copy for someone else. If I hunted, I would definitely buy myself one....maybe I will anyway, and use beef?? I have a very large (700+) cookbook collection and I think this one would rank in the top 5-10%.

Molly_B: This book is a must have for those who want to utilize the animal they harvested to the fullest. To me it's about respect and going back to our roots. Many of the foods here are ones that people would usually turn their nose up at or think of a "gross". Shaw does an amazing job of laying out how to butcher a large game animal and then goes into how to use all the parts. Each chef/hunter has their own way of doing it but it never hurts to add new skills, such as how to prepare the stomach for tripe. I also love the inspiration from different cultures, he doesn't stick to just one. You will see things from Mexico to Africa and Eastern Europe. Recipes I would have never otherwise tried. I as surprised at how simple some of the recipes are and how delicious that can be. I like to just flip through the book and read it when I'm not planning my next dish.

I'm sad I waited so long to get this book and will probably be buying all of his books.

riverbend604: Bought this book for my husband for Christmas, even though it was ordered after. He loves all the recipes in it and is going to definitely try some of them. I was disappointed though when the book arrived as it had what looked like three finger nail marks right on the cover of the book. Couldnt be bothered returning it, too much hassle.

Nik: As an intermediate level outdoors guy, who loves his food, I got a lot out of his book. Hank writes books for the real world types. Nothing pretentious, superficial, high brow, or attention seeking in this book. Just great advise, well written and easy to read. Hank’s passion for cooking is apparent yet he still provides recipes for simple everyday dishes, and all the way to meals you’d be proud to serve to your best friends. His recipes are from many regions of the world so there’s always new and interesting flavours and combinations to try. And he has taught me to cook everything from perfect back straps to soups, stews, roasts, curries, sausages, chilis, burgers, AND the best jerky I have ever eaten (check out the pemmican bar!).
