DLW:
. . . a good one can get away with it. Sometime, a good writer can humanize an elephant, though to try that, too, is risky. Falconer got away with both, this time. It doesn’t take long to form an affinity with “Colossus,” and who would have thought that a mere elephant boy could emerge as both warrior and lover (to two fictionally-beautiful “princesses,” no less.
This is a good, engaging, and fun read. (Just don’t give it too much objective/factual/historical credibility. The title itself gives that caution.)

Mr Rob Breakwell.: Excellent read, how an elephant boy & his elephant outwitted & killed the greatest tactician & general the world has ever seen. Gives you vivid scenes of the true savagery & barbarity of war.

Amazon Customer: This is really a story about a young soldier, the war elephants he trains, and a woman he falls in love with. The use of an alternate history of the end of Alexander the Great’s life just makes the storyline more interesting.

Kindle Customer: This is a good book about an alternate history of Alexander. Great battles and character development. Now just four words so I can submit.

docentdon123: Fool me three four five times shame on me. How does Falconer do it. Every book ends with a shocking climax totally unexpected. We readers are left breathless and wanting at least one more chapter. Amazing the research that must go into his historical thrillers.

Mike Thompson:
Liked the alternative to Alexander’s true ending and the viewpoint of the story too
A good way to imagine a different path of history
Also reminds you of the sliding doors effect of life

wichita lawyer: Great viewpoint. Alexander is mostly offstage & the oliphants carry the plot. Good reading I'll carry on. Maybe Alex will do something significant!

JPS:
This is the first book I have ever read from this author, and, given how much I liked this one, it will certainly not be the last. When I first spotted it on Amazon’s website, I wondered what made Wilbur Smith praise it so much. I understood once I started reading this original piece of alternative history.
Imagine for a moment what could have happened if Alexander the Great had not died – allegedly of poison - in Babylon, if the plot to kill him had failed, as a number of others had previously, and if the plotters – two high ranking Macedonians the chief of the Elephant force – had been foiled, caught and paid the price of their failure. The great conqueror would have pursued the plans he was making at the time, and, given his megalomania, he would had attacked Carthage and then attempted to conquer Sicily.
There are a lot of excellent features in this book, especially for someone who – like me – is rather fond of the Hellenistic period in general, and Alexander, the Successors and the Macedonians in particular. Alexander, unsurprisingly, holds a major role in this book, but he is far from being the hero. In fact, Alexander’s portrait...

Harry Evans: I've read a few of the stand alone books I like them as they have much of interest for me. These individual books are an excellent short read, they keep you interested, then go onto something else unlike some stories that have between 6-12 books by the end it becomes an effort to read.
