Pamela M.: This little bell is small and can easily be hung on your belt or your backpack. Even though it is small it effectively emits a slight ding that is activated when you step and can be heard from many feet away. Although it is a bear bell, it is also good for other critters to warn them of our approach on the trail. Even more effective if several people in your hiking group wear them.

Emma Hunter: We spend a good bit of time hiking and in both the Rockies and Appalachians, and also on some more heavily used local trails. The bell makes a nice tinkle on the dog's collar and our packs and bikes to alert other riders/hikers of our presence. We can also keep an ear on the dog when we're out in wilderness areas where he can roam around our campsites. In addition to carrying bear spray that we can quickly access, the bear bells gives the bears heads up that either lunch is coming or can give them more time to avoid us. Our experience has been the latter. Even grizzlies have glanced at us and sauntered away.

Black bears are very shy. When fat and well fed, black bears run off, while grizzlies saunter off. Give 'em plenty of calm space and avoid sudden movement. Awareness of behavior by season is advisable. Warmer, shorter winters have increased our bear encounters dramatically and are now all too common in the winter especially in the Appalachians. Black bears are hibernating less and awaking early and often...and hungry. We now use full precautions when backcountry skiing out east.

NHAlpine: We went backpacking......and didn't get eaten by a bear....so I guess it works. Pretty much as described. Some describe problems with the magnet not holding the ball but we had no issues and had the bell attached to our pack swinging all over the place and when we had the mesh bag with the magnet over it it never made a sound. We took the magnet off of it at night and rang it every so often and before we went to bed and woke up alive with no tracks around our tent so I guess I have to give this product two thumbs up. The only thing I was disappointed with was with how well it worked. I was looking forward to taking on a bear in the middle of the night but alas.....sigh......this product worked and we had no visitors. It's too bad because I am completely confident I could take one down with one hand.......maybe next time I'll leave this highly effective bell at home ;-)

Buddy Brannan: Somewhere, somehow, no idea where, how, or when, I lost a bell that I bought for my guide dog very recently, to keep track of her various wanderings around the house while we're hanging out at home. I later learned these are called “bear bells”, and, after a couple weeks of not finding the one I bought anywhere, I went searching for a replacement and found this one.

I bought the 2-pack, for $8 and change. You can get one bell for less, naturally. I bought two packs of two, in case I lose one again.

It’s plenty loud, and, well, Hilde has been very stealth with other bells. Not this bear bell and not the one we lost either. Hilde is a 2-year-old German Shepherd, and anyone who knows GSD's will tell you, they can move very stealthily when they have a mind to.

The description says the bell has a “silencer”. Well, now I know what that thing is. The one I got before, which I lost somewhere, had the silencer in a velcro strap that could be easily undone and stuck, but I didn’t know what it was, until of course I lost it. The way the silencer works, you stick the magnet to the bell, and position in such a way that when the clapper inside the bell hits the...

J: As an equestrian, having a bear bell on my saddle is a key safety item. Not only has the bear bell encouraged pigs and other wildlife to scatter from my path, but it has also helped with warning other equestrians on two-way trails. When you're riding with others, it's easy enough to cover the bell with the magnet so as not to annoy the other horses and riders. Two of my horses accepted the bell with no issues at all, and the other took about 5 minutes to adjust to it.

I initially started using a bear bell after taking a bad fall off one of my horses. I was riding in an area of high grass and several deer abruptly awoke and ran off. My horse was so startled that she went into a raging bucking spree and gallop (at the same time!). Had I been riding with a bell, the deer would have been alerted long before we came upon them and the incident would have been averted.
