The Grim Sleeper by Christine Pelisek tells the story of one of California’s most deadly serial killers, who killed many in Los Angeles in the 1980’s and was mainly ignored, only to return in 2002. Because the victims were poor, often drug addicted prostitutes, it is felt that the police did not take the killings as seriously as they might have. The author is a reporter who studied and involved herself in the case for more than a decade. She provided a lot of info about the victims, their families, and the case itself and how it was solved. The story was interesting and it was well written. I give the book 4 stars.

laura zoom: I couldn't put this book down. Excellent read about the hunting for and capture of one Americas worst serial murderers, told by an intrepid Canadian reporter who helped expose the story. The emphatic detailing of each victim's lives gives a voice to the victims who were treated like garbage by the killer. You find out who they all were, and why their paths unluckily crossed with his.

Pelisek does a deep dive into the lives of the actual victims affected by the Grim Sleeper, and the dark, disturbing aftershocks that continued to throttle the families of those killed. Up there with other true crime classics like THE STRANGER BESIDE ME, THE GOOD NURSE and THE RIVERMAN. Pelisek deftly covers the facts and explores the personal stories surrounding the case while also framing it with her own personal experiences while covering the case - from her beat up car to the poignant loss of her parents near the conclusion. It's a near-perfect piece of journalism with a touching human angle that feels genuine and immediate. Highly recommended.

karen makeba: A most informative and well written book, there was very little coverage of these terrible crimes in the news, probably since all the victims were African American, and the media did not see fit to cover this. A good read if you are interested in crime stories, I do wish there had been more
information about the killer, but the information on all the victims were so well researched and very well written.

CLN: I am always interested in non-fiction like this. I thought it was a little dry and spent a lot of time on the details of each victim's family, which was reviewed every time they were mentioned. For example, I could remember that ....was the husband of Mary the author didn't need to tell me each time.
