Sara T.: I found this book 16, set in Paris, one of the best of the Chief Inspector Gamache novels! And I’ve read the previous 15. While the wonderful, weird village of Three Pines does not figure much in this book it’s still a great story in large part probably because all the Gamaches plus the Beauvoirs are in Paris. And, Inspector Armand Gamache’s godfather Stephen is a formidable and fascinating character. The layers of intrigue and cover-up, etc. are kind of amazing but author Penny pulls it all together.

Kindle Customer: The final display of ethical concern along with an absorbing narrative leaves me grateful for Louise Penny's ability of course but her humanity as well.

Jean J: I have been a regular reader of this series but had become rather tired of the same characters and setting of ThreePines. This book is set in Paris and I found it refreshing. Great story with all the twists and turns to keep your interest to the end.

#EmptyNestReader: “Hell is empty, and all the devils are here.” Shakespeare’s, The Tempest

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, his wife Reine-Marie and Armand's god-father, billionaire Stephen Horowitz, are all in Paris to celebrate the birth of the Gamache’s 4th grandchild. Daughter, Annie and her husband, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, are now living in Paris and their first daughter is due any day. Jean-Guy, formerly Gamache’s second in command in the Surete du Quebec, has accepted a private sector position with GHS Engineering, a multinational industry. The Gamache’s son Daniel, his wife Roslyn and their 2 daughters already reside in the City of Light. Following a dinner out, Stephen is hit by a car while crossing the street. There is no doubt that the hit was intentional.

The 93 year old Horowitz is put into a medically induced coma. Gamache begins his investigation by contacting his friend and peer, Claude Dussault, Prefect of the Paris police. Both men know that Horowitz has enemies and that he uses both his power and his money to bring down those whom he perceived as crooks and that he has many secrets. Why was Horowitz renting a grand suite at a posh Parisian hotel when his own...

“Each day they tracked down killers. Each day they put their own lives on the line. And in return they were scapegoated. Chained to the ground, food for politicians.”

Jean-Guy Beauvoir isn’t going to live like that anymore. He has taken Annie and their small son, Honoré, to live in Paris, where he has accepted a good job with a big engineering company. She is heavily pregnant, due any day now, and he intends to be a better husband and father by not having to dodge bullets – and politicians.

“He was worn down, worn out by his work in the Sûreté du Québec. He’d headed up the homicide department after his mentor and chief, and father-in-law, Armand Gamache, had been suspended.”

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his beloved Reine-Marie have lost both their children and three (almost four) grandchildren to Paris, and as the book opens, they have arrived in Paris themselves where they are staying in their apartment.

Also in Paris, is Stephen Horowitz, Armand’s godfather, who helped to raise him when Armand was orphaned at only nine years old. He was a significant presence, advisor, and surrogate father to the growing boy. Now in...

David Kloth: In the case of "All the Devils Are Here," here refers to Paris. Chief Inspector Gamache's son and daughter-in-law had lived in Paris with their daughters for several years, and Gamache's daughter and son-in-law have just moved there.

Son-in-law and long-time second in command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, has left the Surete to go into private enterprise in Paris. Unknown to Jean-Guy is that CI Gamache's wealthy godfather had a hand in arranging the job from behind the scenes. Now the entire extended Gamache family, son and wife, daughter and husband, CI Gamache and wife, Reine-Marie, and godfather, are in Paris to welcome the newest addition to the family. Annie Gamache Beauvoir and Jean-Guy are expecting a daughter any minute.

That's when all hell breaks loose, uncovering many of the devils that have been hiding behind a curtain of respectability. Gamache's godfather is hit in the street by a hit-and-run driver, and Gamache knows it was attempted murder. Then, a man unknown to Gamache is found murdered in his godfather's apartment. Gamache and Beauvoir recognize the shot in the back, and then one in the head, as a commando killing.

As Gamache struggles with a severely...
