TLW: Sgt Roberts served very late in the American war in Vietnam but didn’t mention being spit on by activists when he returned, which makes me wonder how common that was. It is sad however that our leaders seemingly never learn that the American people will ultimately disavow endless war in countries so far away. The latest example being the bungled but inevitable abandonment of Afghanistan. I know lots of Vietnam vets, being just a few years too young to serve, some who enlisted and others who were drafted. What they have in common is that they did their duty, just as many of their dads did in WW2. My hero’s are not the few that fled to Canada, but the majority who served honorably whether they wanted to or not.

CooperveryCoopervery: John Roberts describes very accurately the life of an o'deuce infantryman under the canopy in the I corps in 1970. He was a squad leader in C company, and so his first-hand POV is mostly with that company, but he also does a great job touching on the ancillary engagements of other O'deuce companies. It is clear that much thorough research went into this book. I myself served as a medic with Alpha Company 2/502 in 1970 thru most of 1971 and at the time I heard many platoon stories about the Texas Star operation he describes in such detail. Now I know the details. He is a very good writer and I enjoyed his accurate description of the battalion area, REMF attitudes etc, as well as the intense life under the canopy of an O'Deuce trooper. It brought back many memories of my own. He even mentions such details as the really good thanksgiving meal made available to soldiers out in the bush that year. My company was brought onto Bastogne to partake of that meal after a solid month under the canopy that November and it was good to be reminded of such a small detail. After a month in monsoon rains I can tell you that meal and a roof overhead for a night meant a lot. I have read all the books...

Patrick: A very historical account regarding Times and dates seemingly very well researched about a US army shake n bake drafted sergeant. He spends a year in the Bush more or less having mainly small group contacts with one hill capture battle.
Interesting as he communicates his feelings very well.

Philip King: Despite having some technical issues when I downloaded this book I managed to sort them out and am very glad I did.
This is an excellent account of the war, well written and informative without excessive use of technical jargon.
The author was kind enough to offer assistance with my earlier problems, a true gentleman indeed.
If you have an interest in the war and the men who fought it, then I recommend this book.

Bill Gordon: Really enjoyed this book because at last we had a book that focused on the lives of the men before, during and after the war. So many just finish 'on the freedom bird home' but this discussed the legacy of those who took place and their spouses. Great read.

Amazon Customer: once again a voice is given to the young american men going to a war most of them never wanted.these guys once they were in amongst it were not doing it for their government.they were trying the best they could to survive and help their buddies survive a very dirty war the best they could,while still carrying out orders.

Roberts is an excellent personal account, and historical overview of the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division's role in the "Last Major Battle of the Vietnam War" fought by US forces. The battles fought on two obscure mountain tops (Hills 714 and 882), as written by John G Roberts, who served as a frontlines combat infantryman with the 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment or the "O-Deuce" as it was generally referred to, during "Operation Texas Star", is based on his personal recollections and experiences, as well as fellow soldiers recollections and is also, well substantiated by documented research. The author uses official US Military documents, (Daily Logs and Journals, and After Action Reports) to verify the day-to-day combat operations taking place during the Battle of Hills 714 and 882, which resulted in over 200 US casualties; 30 of which, were Killed in Action (KIAs). This battle significantly, decimated the ranks of the frontlines combat infantrymen of the O-Duece.
