Kindle Customer: I have a large hobby garden that I fill every year with everything from berries, to squashes, beans, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and flowers for my pollinators and more. I'm forever on the look out for cheap, but effective ways to germinate seeds. I love this medium! First, it's not made from peat moss which is important to me since harvesting peat is not environmentally friendly and it's a finite resource. Secondly, the bricks are small enough to stack in my greenhouse on a shelf as opposed to large bags of soil. Once you add water, they expand enough that I can use one brick to fill two seed trays. And lastly, it really works!! I have a high rate of germination compared to seeds started in the seed starting dirt mixes. I also start some plants in a hydroponic system and transplant them into the coconut coir and I rarely lose a seedling. I've also used the root riot cubes, and I've found these to be more successful. The only caution I would have for these is they are fairly ph neutral. So if you are planting something that needs high acidity (blueberries especially) you will need to have an additive to raise the acidity.

Jake: Used this with my new soil blocker to start seedlings this spring. You don't want to use only this, you have to mix it with compost or potting soil so the blocks are sturdy and have nutrients, but the coir holds a lot of water and allows the roots to grow without balling up. I'd say 95% of my seedlings using the coir survived transplant and are currently thriving.

realBuyer: This is a really good quality product. It is much nicer to work with than peat moss. Doesn't have a moldy smell, is nice to the touch, and is very easy to rehydrate and mix. Unfortunately, I found it to be not best for me when it comes to starting seeds, thus 4 stars. It is still great as a peat replacement in potting mixes. My main issue with this product is that it dries out way too fast and I lost some seedlings due to that. Also, it doesn't contain any fertilizers like some other seed-starting products which is good and bad depending on who you ask. I won't be using this for seed starting but will surely consider it for making potting mixes ... when I'll be a millionaire or when this product becomes more affordable, whatever comes first.

Common-Sense-Is-Key: I was looking for planting soil as my yard is mostly clay-based. I saw this & was immediately intrigued. I purchased 4 to get my seeds started (totally too much lol I underestimated just how much these bricks would yield). I eventually purchased wheel-barrow sized blocks too; just to cover my entire garden.

Anyways, my seeds thrived in this soil alternative! I had grow lights & heating mat setup in my seeding room in my basement. The soil has barely any smell to it & it feels like fine potting soil.
The leftovers were in a bucket that I covered with a trash bag. It remained wet for weeks after! I eventually dumped it into my outside garden.

The only downside I foresee is that this soil will not hold nutrients like regular, in-the-ground soil; so be prepared to have nutrients ready to feed your plants.
From my research & trial/errors, I add the following:
calcium, magnesium, nitrogen, iron, worm casing fertilizer & nitrogen-based plant food pebbles.

Additionally, the soil will dry out in the sun long before the undersoil. So be very, very aware of how much you water your plants. Since this soil dries quickly, you do not want to...
