Stan: The colors are great. No problem with point breakage. Not as soft as the Prismacolor but blend very well.
I use these more than any of my other brands of pencils.

There are five sets of color pencils in the Black Widow line: Monarch (48 ct), Dragon (36 ct), Black Widow (24 ct), Scorpion (24 ct) and Cobra (24 ct) and then an additional two set for skin tones (light and dark). I've spent my evening swatch ALL of them while watching the last 2/3 of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Things I like about these pencils:
The cores are hard. Not one of them broke, even after I sharpened them. After primarily using Prismacolors recently, which have notoriously brittle tips, that was incredible. I love the colors - so many greens and and pinks. I enjoy the theming - as the naming of the pencils sort of reflect the theme of the box. For instance, the dragon set has pencils called Serpent, Blue tongue, gold dust, cobblestone and castle. The colors in the Monarch set are more muted - kind of forest-y in color.

Things I'm a little "meh" on -
Because the cores are so hard, they are a little scratchy in the lay down--they even sound like a graphite pencil. Some colors lay better than others, but you've got to put down several layers to cover the...

Therezinha Guzzo: Os lápis são bem macios, gostoso de colorir. Trazem no corpo do lápis informações com a marca, nome da coe e , numero da cor. Facilita a confecção de tabelas e, com isso ajuda a organizar o trabalho de colorir. A embalagem é de lata, bonita e muito bem feita, acolchoando por dentro os lápis. Só achei que poderia ter uma paleta melhor. O recurso é comprar a coleção, o que penso ir fazendo. Recomendo.

Yves M: I was disappointed in this set. It's nothing wrong with the pencils or anything like that, I love the pencils as much as the ones from the other Black Widow sets, which I have rated 5 stars. It's just that I got the old style tin when all my other sets have the new style tin. The quality is MUCH worse on the old style tin, to the point that I thought at first the set I got was a poor counterfeit in comparison. Due to the design, the tin I got is warped and will not sit flat on a solid surface, the plastic that holds the pencils is crinkled in spots and will not hold the pencils so the printed sides are even making it more difficult to see the pencils. Also the size of the tin is different from the others although that is a minor annoyance compared to the rest.

I know the company does sell open stock so I contacted them to see if I could buy a tin of the new design from them and the answer I got was no, there are no options to buy a tin of either design open stock, only the pencils themselves are available. If I want a new tin, I would have to buy another set off of amazon and hope for the best (though will probably not be able to get a new tin until they sell out and get...

E. Valero: My review of this set is basically the same of the Scorpion edition 2000. The Cobra edition set offers a new range of colours, are richly pigmented, have good lay-down, and a vibrant output. This set of 24 pencils remains affordable, when compared to other pencils of this quality. The texture and performance of these pencils reminds me of the Derwent Coloursoft pencils. When I compared the swatches, they are very similar however I will state these pencils are much easier to blend and to sharpen. They are a softer lead, the colours are rich, blend well; they have an almost pastel pencil output, a bit scratchy but the layering was impressive, and I am able to get a real sharp point without the leads breaking. The names of the colours remain charming and the useful tray keeps the pencils in check. The pencils themselves are slick in appearance, encased in black wood, and the names of the colours are branded on the pencils.

This set is a companion piece to the Black Widow 1000 edition (the original pencils received an upgrade. They now come in a tin, and the name of the pencils are now branded on the barrels), and the Scorpion edition 2000. All sets offer different colours so...

After using these colored pencils extensively, I can re-iterate that these are a pleasure to use! I have two Artist Quality brands (old Prismacolor Berols and Blick Studio) and these Black Widow colored pencils. While these are not "artist quality", they lay down very smooth and with much ease. Depending on the paper used, using a light pressure, I can get 4 to 6 layers and a nice smooth blend when burnishing with either a pencil or colorless blender. They sharpen nicely (I use an Alvin bullet sharpener) and don't break. If all you have ever used are cheap colored pencils, likely these will be a delight to use. If you love Prismacolors, and/or have other Artist Quality pencils, then you may not enjoy these as much. They are less pigmented than my artist quality pencils, and as stated, 6 layers on good paper is about the limit, 4 on lesser quality paper. Colorists who've been limited by inexpensive pencils though, should find they are able to do so much more. The price is actually comparable to some artist quality sets (in the U.S.), but the advantage is you can purchase them one set at a time without repeat of colors.
